They start off playing one on one— pointlessly exhausting themselves. And when they’re both panting hard, center court and crouched, mirroring each other while Kise dribbles the ball. It falls into a melodic rhythm for the both of them - and they almost fall into a swing of nostalgia, fingers curled around the past and and fists pressing against each others chests because their hearts are beating hard and they aren’t quite ready to let go of the feeling. 

And maybe he catches him off guard, or maybe Kise has actually grown that much in the time that Aomine has looked away but he breaks past him,

( and he swears he sees something trail after him when he does - it’s blinding and bright and it shines golden - he wants to chase after it ) 

He runs after him, strains his legs and overexerts himself as if that feeling actually exists for him, but Kise beats him to it, forcing the ball through the hoop and hanging from it, Aomine watching from below, breathing harder, feeling the loss resonate inside. It’s a single round that Kise has managed to win, and he can’t decide whether to laugh or shout.

When Kise hits the ground, Aomine, with all of his irrationality and emotions spilling from his hands, storms up and grabs Kise by the wrist. He tugs him close, hissing into his face—

“That’s all you can win? One match? That’s it???”

He’s leaning in too close; their foreheads nearly touching, their breaths mingling together, and the skin of their noses brushing. Instinct drives him, raw, rough and too forward, all at once. And they’re suddenly lip locked and tugging at one another - Aomine keeping ahold of his wrist while the other hand grabs at Kise’s neck, sliding up, fingers gripping his hair and tugging too hard while his lips part and eagerly tug at the other’s. He notices too much how warm the inside of his mouth is and notices too much how he Kise winces back when he bites down on his lower lip - but they don’t stop, only continue to scrape at each other until they’ve broken past the surface.

When they break apart, panting harder than ever before, stunned into silence, Aomine only disrupts the quiet to say,

“Not bad, I guess.”
