Kohni Shogun (高2→将軍) - Rythmics/ASK - PlayStation - 2000
Kohni Shogun is a bizarre game that combines two different genres, a traditional dating sim and a sound novel very reminiscent of Kamaitachi no Yoru (featuring colored silhouettes and all). The beginning of the game is set in the year 2001 where the player controls a high school boy that can interact with several potential love interests while taking exams that can increase the player’s stats in order to make them more desirable (similar to Tokimeki Memorial). This segment continues until the year 2003 when the player suddenly falls into a portal that sends them back in time to medieval Japan where the gameplay changes to that of a typical sound novel with text covering the entire screen and the player making choices that can change the story. Surprisingly IGN actually wrote a dismissive article about the game back in 2000 as part of their pre-TGS coverage, although they say the game is a PlayStation 2 title for some reason. Even more surprising is that an obscure game like Kohni Shogun is still available to purchase thanks to Hamster publishing the title on PSN back in 2010.
