I've found out how to inject facepaint into the tomodachi life game.
You need an emulator or a hacked switch.

The method is described here: https://gamebanana.com/tools/22280. I've cleaned up the python script that the author wrote to include the actual zstd compression and decompression here. (needs python 3.14 because it's using the zstd compression and decompression from the python standard library).
You need ryubing canary 1.3.265 to avoid the emulator crashing on boot (and obviously the right prod keys) to run the title.
Right click the game and open the save folder
Inside the folder you will see the Ugc folder
You paste the UgcFacePaintxxx.canvas.zs into the script directory
And run the convert_canvas_to_png function on the canvas. At this point you will output a png that corresponds to your mii
Screenshot your game without the facepaint and put it underneath your facepaint to draw more easily
The canvas is limited to 256 x 256 px
You can use binary brushes to make it pixelated like in the game, I've shared some brushes with stabilisation and binary here https://mega.nz/folder/l81GSIoI#JbQwuXQDeld6C7YmLgkmNA
Then export your facepaint as png and run the conversion (this time from png to canvas)
You will have this which you need to paste back into the ugc folder under the same name, just be sure to rename the file or else ryujinx won't pick it up

And you will see your changes.
Now here's the trick, there's two folders named '0' and '1' in the emulator. '0' is supposed to be the active directory and '1' is supposed to be the backup save directory. Backup the whole save directory. For some reason, the emulator won't save to '0' properly after a texture change so save the game. Close the emulator. Delete the '0' folder. (the changes should now be in folder 1).
And reload the game again and the facepaint should stick permanently.
Quick Warning to Those Playing Tomodachi Life on Ryujinx
UPDATE: A FIX HAS BEEN FOUND!! In your Settings, go to Graphics and change the preferred GPU to Intel. That way, the photos you take using in-game measures will be saved and crashes will be greatly reduced!
Update as of May 1st 2026: The issue has been patched; there is no need to change the GPU anymore! :D
As of writing this, there is currently a bug present that will result in the entire program crashing without much warning. This can be activated by either using Foto Tomo's services or saving the vacation photos to the system; it will also create a subfolder within the "SD card" that is associated with the day of the month, but nothing will be saved within it.
Obviously, even with autosave now being a fully-fledged feature within the game, this can spell loads of trouble for those who have spent a good while on a single playthrough and would wind up encountering this error without prior knowledge of its existence. Right now, little to no news regarding this bug has been popping up, so the best thing one can do right now is to be patient and wait for the game's official release date in order for these issues to be properly addressed. Don't forget to save regularly, as well; even with the latest firmware update, crashes do tend to occur every now and then, so be diligent and aware at all times.
Wow, nintendo must be fucking terrified of day 1 emulation on the switch 2. they shut down ryujinx, they're going after emulator videos on yt. switch 2 must be fully backwards compatible w/ switch 1, i.e.; the same fucking shit just juiced up a bit (so maybe their games won't run sub-30fps for fucking once). the fact that ryujinx on linux is STILL up on flatpack is hilariously telling. it's got nothing to do with principles. it's entirely profit-motivated.
they'll never learn tho. this kind of suppression never holds. they'll never stop folks doing the work. even denuvo didn't stop piracy.
