season 11: thoughts

ok here’s my stream of consciousness thoughts on s11

first of all i thought s10 was great, if i gave it a grade i’d say A- honestly, i know some people had issues w it, but personally i really liked it and it gave me really high expectations for s11

the one problem i had was frank retires, which i saw the preview for and was rlly scared for bc the humor seemed really off, and when i watched it i thought it was super out of character and weirdly constructed & it made me freaked out that s11 was going to be more of the same since it was so late in the season

then i got the s10 dvd, me and my fiance had all these theories about which eps they’d do commentary on, and what kinda extras thre would be, but when we got it literally everything on it is the episodes and the blooper reel, no commentaries or anything, which also made me afraid for s11

same goes for the lack of promo material other than that one edit of the gang looking all children of the corn or w/e, and when i saw the previews for the new season it all looked really similar to frank retires in tone and visually which freaked me out

annnnnd basically it’s how the season was for me, it seemed out of character and strange in a lot of ways, and very different from sunny’s usual comedic style

but when the season started & i looked on the sunny wiki to see the episode order i noticed (and im sure other folks did too) that RCG only wrote 1 episode (and it wasn’t that great) which leads me to believe, along w rob doing the minecraft movie, charlie undoubtedly having some kinda comedy project, and the lack of promo materials and hype, that RCG was less involved with this season, and that’s why the tone felt off and not very funny

there were too many callbacks to old episodes and jokes, it’s not funny to just rehash a joke (as many folks have said)

also in most of the eps it didn’t seem like the gang was Friends, if that makes sense? in the earlier seasons of sunny (say like seasons 4-6), there’s a sense that even though they screw each other over, they like each other and really are friends (even if they argue and do all kinds of bad stuff). and in this season, w/ a few exceptions like the gang goes to hell part 2, it didn’t feel like they liked each other at all, which makes it less fun for me to watch

dennis was Not funny this season at all, it’s like they forgot that he has character traits other than being creepy, and it’s just not funny. i know ppl on reddit have said for seasons that the characters are being flanderized, but this was the first season where i kinda agreed with that, especially w dennis

charlie was good this season, we got to see both his goofy side and his manipulative calculated side which is cool 

obviously im still angry that they put mac back in the closet

ive always thought they did it because they dont’ think it’d be funny if he was out/they think it’s too much character development, but if that’s what they think i totally disagree idk

the gang goes to hell part 1 literally felt like i was watching an episode of family guy and that’s not a good thing

the episodes i liked:

frank falls out a window

even tho it was a callback ep, i thought it was a solid B and had good pacing, which i felt like a lot of the episodes in this season lacked

mac and dennis move to the suburbs

ok it was very dark, but i like any ep where any two or more main characters interact in a close setting like that

being frank

this surprised me, i was geared up to hate this episode but honestly i thought it was well paced, funny, and actually pretty cute

charlie catches a leprechaun

felt like a classic ep, although i really really didn’t like dennis 

the gang goes to hell part 2

same as mac and dennis move to the suburbs, just amplified. only bad part of the ep was.... of course.... mac going back in the closet

if i gave this season a grade it’d probably be a C. idk it was ok, there were some good episodes but for the most part i didn’t like it and it felt very out of character and strange and relied too much on callbacks

ok so first one: (a) it looks like mac put something gross in dennis’ food, (b) beer and eggs(?) for breakfast. nice, (c) what are those photos on the table? they look like photos of dennis?

second one: judging by the trumpet and the big binder, they’re playing chardee macdennis, but who’s that guy in the foreground at the table next to frank? :-0
