i've been seeing a graphic lately that lists all these alternatives to 'said', and that's fine, but i actually get really annoyed when writers are allergic to the 'said' tag.  you don't need to come up with a unique verb for every bit of dialogue.  the said tag is fine.  it blends in.  it helps sustain 'the dream' of a story, if you will, much more than awkwardly placed dialogue tags do.
