S12 lucifer!mary au where sam gets mary pregnant with jack 👀👀👀👀
plsssss tell me more about cas dying in 12x12 au. what are your terrible delicious angsty thoughts? what does mary do?? does she even tell sam and dean she was working for the bmol or do they figure it out another way?
I'm thrilled you asked, but be warned that I still don't have anything concrete yet in how I want this au to play out.
I think initially Mary keeps her mouth shut. Admitting this whole hunt was a bmol mess isn't gonna make anyone feel better. And I think she's not going to know what to do with Dean's reaction. It's like something in him shatters. He's silent. He won't look at anyone. He won't engage. All he does is gather Cas' body up to move him to the car. Sam turns to Mary and keeps asking how did this whole hunt blow up with badly? Mary keeps muttering that this is the job. Accidents happen on the job.
I think back at the bunker Dean just keeps silently sitting there, staring into space and drinking. Sam sits across from him upset and trying to get a few words out. He wants to get the ball rolling planning the hunter's funeral. Dean slides his phone over showing that he's already sent texts to people. Claire will be there in two days. Sam quiets down and Mary decides to retreat back to her room. But on the way she puts a gentle hand on Dean's shoulder. He doesn't really acknowledge it besides a light touch to her hand. She then goes over to Sam and squeezes his shoulder. Sam asks if she's okay, and she replies that she's just happy they made it home. In the background Dean's hands curl into fists and he downs the rest of his bottle in one gulp.
The funeral is basically Mary's personal Hell. Sam sticks by her like glue, because he's worried about her. He points out and explains who Claire is and why there are strange people watching in the back. Angels came to see for themselves that Cas was gone. And Mary squirms hearing how angels possess bodies and steal them away. She asks if they (the Winchesters) are okay with that. Sam shrugs saying it's complicated. She then questions if giving Cas a hunter's funeral is even the right thing. Shouldn't they hand him over to his own kind for this? Sam explains that we've been the only true family Cas has had in a long time. And then more quietly he continues, Dean needs this.
As everyone is leaving and Dean shoos Claire to follow Sam back to the bunker, Dean notices that Crowley is waiting in the shadows. He comes forward now that he's spotted. He quips, and then offers a sincere apology and goodbye to Cas. And then he tells Dean that he still doesn't understand what any of them were doing there in the first place. Dean tells him what he knows, and Crowley asks if they found anything in the house. Dean's brow furrows, what are you getting at? Crowley leans in close saying, something is missing from the house. And if you don't have it, and I don't have it....then we're in a lot of trouble. Dean's rising panic jumps to anger, and Crowley realizes that Dean genuinely has no idea Ramiel had the Colt. And so he explains the mess and Dean calls Mary over.
Crowley smiles devilishly as she slowly makes her way over. Mary can feel the blade over her head, ready to crash down. Dean is finally looking and speaking at her directly, but she didn't want it like this. He angrily asks if she took anything from the house. She tries to lie, because like before when Ramiel asked she said she didn't know. And Dean gets angrier because his gut knows she's lying. All he can get out is a shout: Cas died! Sam rushes over asking what's going on/break up fight mode. And Dean snaps, the colt was in the house Sammy. That's what Ramiel wanted back so badly. What Cas died for. At that Sam turns to Mary, was that why we were there? Mom, did you know? And the truth spills out of her.
From there it's more of rough concepts I'm not sure how they tie together. Obviously from here Sam and Dean are HURT. And Mary tries to appeal to them that everything she did was for their best interests. Sam ends up being the one that comes around forgiving her quickly. From his point of view he can relate. He's done questionable things for the sake of keeping people safe. And he really wants to see that trait as something they can bond over. Yes, they've both made mistakes but there's something comforting in that his drive to protect at all costs is something he gets from his mom. Meanwhile Dean, Claire, and Crowley have other plans. (Dean didn't want Claire involved but she's not going anywhere). Right now they feel getting the colt back is top priority. Unlike Kelly, they actually have a good idea where it is. Dean is going to see Mary's actions as a betrayal, Sam forgiving Mary and giving the bmol a chance as a betrayal, and later Crowley hiding Lucifer as a betrayal. Claire and Dean will pick up more of Cas' plot looking for Kelly. I think Claire would end up being the advocate that Jack deserves to be born. And I think Kelly's memory of Cas, and the remaining traces of his grace in Claire and Dean are what Jack latches onto.
John rolls his eyes at the raising voices. He’s not really surprised --his boys had been acting like an old married couple since they both hit double digits and their behaviors had changed nothing through the past years. They got older, of course. Smarter, faster. They’re better hunters John’s ever been-- but they still bicker as if they’re a pair of five years old fighting over a toy they both want and John’s satisfied to come back to something so familiar.
It’s good to have something so familiar to cling to, because Mary leaving had been a real backstab.
“--what, fuck you.” Sam just replies at whatever Dean shot at him. His voice is full of venon and it’s obvious he’s furious, because the kid disappears from the library in record time.
The sound of a door being shoved close seems to echo through the whole bunker a few seconds later. Well this isn’t any different from when they were just teenagers and John basks in the strange sense of nostalgia around him. It almost feels like home, but he knows better.
“So--” John starts nonchalantly, takes a second to sip on his beer and it’s enough to give Dean some time to drop his body on the nearest seat. "Sammy wants a divorce?”
Dean just scoffs and runs a hand through his face, scratching the few days old stubble slowly, but says nothing. This is a current, new behavior John can’t recognize-- but it’s one he can understand. His boys have been through a lot, they’ve seen a lot and John can’t blame them for being almost strangers to him.
At least I’m not ditching them, he thinks bitterly.
“What did you do?” Dean asks suddenly, and he’s already stealing a beer from John’s pack before one can notice. Smartass. “You know, when you guys had some fight like this?”
“We had a lot of chick flick moments. After she kicked my ass for getting drunk as hell.” John shrugs and some of the tension resting on Dean’s shoulders just melts as he laughs. “But for you boys--” He finishes the beer in his hands and gets another. “Some makeup sex will do.”
Dean snorts, but it’s as clear as day in his face that he’s considering the idea. After a long minute he stares up at John, frowning, unsure of what to do. “You think I’ll survive long enough to suggest it?”
“Text him. Safer. But later, smartass--” John confiscates Dean’s phone before he can start typing the message. “You do it now, he eats you alive.”
Dean simply hums in understanding. John laughs.
It feels good to be home again.

As Sam has imagined, things aren’t exactly easy between them now.
He hasn’t expected things to be easy. He’s deaf, Dean is furious and Cas is missing. That’s a perfect recipe for chaos in their little world, and he’s not even adding Mary in the mix. Honestly, Sam has given up on trying to contact her a few days after the banshee’s incident-- at least for a while. It’s not like he doesn’t want her to know what happened. He truly does. He just has a lot to deal with already.
Dean is a lot. His big brother is just pure drama and tons of self loathing and Sam... well, Sam is more than done with that shitty attitude. At this point, there’s little he can do to reassure Dean that he shouldn’t be blamed for what had happened.
They’re hunters and humans. Being broken, beaten and permanently damaged was part of the job. It has happened before. If angels and demons and gods hadn’t showed up to mess with their already fucked up lives, Sam is pretty sure one of them would be dead or in a worse state than deaf. But with cosmic powers popping around them day in day out, they’ve grown careless and Sam knows that. It’s easy to be living legends when there’s ancient god-like powers backing them up and fixing them whenever they need it.
Reality had hit them harder when their personal, all powerful first aid kit had vanished into thin air.
Sam isn’t sure if he should laugh at the irony of that or just get worried. Cas could be in trouble. But hey, it’s happened before and the angel always came back in one piece.
Right now, he knows that if Dean tries to call Cas one more time, Sam is going to smash that damn phone in the nearest wall.
“Dean.” Sam knows he’s being louder than necessary--Dean almost jumping out of his skin at Sam’s sudden voice is enough for him to know, but hey, at least his brother is staring at him now. “Stop.”
Dean’s eyes wide for a second and then narrow slightly, lips pressed into a thin line. He wants to argue, to tell Sam to stop being a stubborn asshole but there won’t be any childish banters between them again, at least for a long while. Adapting is hard. Dean is upset.
For a moment, Sam wonders if it’ll be too humiliating to call Eileen and ask for some experienced help here.
Dean’s touch is soft against his arm and Sam barely flinches away. They won’t be hunting for a long time, but the instincts are still there, always on fight or flight mode. But it’s Dean here, and he smiles softly at his brother.
“You sure?” Dean mouths, slow and suddenly patient enough for Sam to understand what he’s saying. It’s not so difficult if they’re patient enough but Sam is no fool. There’s no way they’ll be doing it without stumbling over each other again and again.
Even so, Dean’s hands are comfortable and warm on Sam’s skin and for the first time in all those weeks, Sam finally feels at ease. He’s home. He nods and smiles again, leaning closer and closer until his lips are pressed against Dean’s in a soft kiss that is slowly building up into something else. This is good. They’re good.
They can deal with everything else later.

Sam was still on the sidelines because of his foot and usually mom stayed with him at home but today it was Dean's turn. Sam complained about how he didn't need a babysitter but with Toni still out there Mary, Cas, and Dean weren't taking any chances. Dean insisted on staying back because he needed to talk to Sam. Cas immediately understood and all but dragged a concerned Mary away. Dean was worried about Sam. The kid's been distant and reserved since his rescue. He's especially kept his distance from Dean, which bothered the older man. At first, Dean figured it was because he was scared of mom finding out about their relationship but he's not so sure anymore. Even today, with just the two of them hanging out in the lounge, Sam was still avoiding Dean. Dean sighed. He set his laptop aside and watched his younger brother with curiosity. "You know I love you, right?" The older Winchester finally asked. Sam looked taken aback and his hazel eyes widened in surprise. It was obvious he wasn't expecting that. Dean didn't blame him. He never really proclaimed his love so much in words. "I know," Sam shifted under Dean's gaze and gave him a small smile. Dean returned the smile before focusing on his laptop again. "Well, when you're ready to talk. I'll be right here," he mumbled without moving his eyes from the screen before him. "Talk about what?" Sam asked in a meek voice. "About what happened with those Women of Letters. I know they did more than torture you. You wouldn't be this withdrawn if you were just hurting physically. So like I said, when you're ready to talk. I'll be right here," the older Winchester reiterated, typing away on his laptop. "Thanks, Dean," Sam whispered back. "And I- I love you too."
