John rolls his eyes at the raising voices. He’s not really surprised --his boys had been acting like an old married couple since they both hit double digits and their behaviors had changed nothing through the past years. They got older, of course. Smarter, faster. They’re better hunters John’s ever been-- but they still bicker as if they’re a pair of five years old fighting over a toy they both want and John’s satisfied to come back to something so familiar.

It’s good to have something so familiar to cling to, because Mary leaving had been a real backstab.

“--what, fuck you.” Sam just replies at whatever Dean shot at him. His voice is full of venon and it’s obvious he’s furious, because the kid disappears from the library in record time.

The sound of a door being shoved close seems to echo through the whole bunker a few seconds later. Well this isn’t any different from when they were just teenagers and John basks in the strange sense of nostalgia around him. It almost feels like home, but he knows better.

“So--” John starts nonchalantly, takes a second to sip on his beer and it’s enough to give Dean some time to drop his body on the nearest seat. "Sammy wants a divorce?”

Dean just scoffs and runs a hand through his face, scratching the few days old stubble slowly, but says nothing. This is a current, new behavior John can’t recognize-- but it’s one he can understand. His boys have been through a lot, they’ve seen a lot and John can’t blame them for being almost strangers to him.

At least I’m not ditching them, he thinks bitterly.

“What did you do?” Dean asks suddenly, and he’s already stealing a beer from John’s pack before one can notice. Smartass. “You know, when you guys had some fight like this?”

“We had a lot of chick flick moments. After she kicked my ass for getting drunk as hell.” John shrugs and some of the tension resting on Dean’s shoulders just melts as he laughs. “But for you boys--” He finishes the beer in his hands and gets another. “Some makeup sex will do.”

Dean snorts, but it’s as clear as day in his face that he’s considering the idea. After a long minute he stares up at John, frowning, unsure of what to do. “You think I’ll survive long enough to suggest it?”

“Text him. Safer. But later, smartass--” John confiscates Dean’s phone before he can start typing the message. “You do it now, he eats you alive.”

Dean simply hums in understanding. John laughs.

It feels good to be home again.

Sam giggles when his friend starts tickling him, little cold fingers trying to reach any inch of his belly. Dad isn’t home tonight-- he’s working again or something, and Dean is in his room doing ‘teenager stuff’. Sam doesn’t want to know what that truly means, but for him it means he’ll have a lot of free time to play with Max today. He’s cool with that.

Sam doesn’t like it when Dad says Max’s just an imaginary friend. Max is real! They play together all the time! He doesn’t know why Dad can’t see him, nor Dean-- but Max is real and they’re best friends and that’s fine because he has a friend only to himself, just like Sully. Sometimes Sam misses Sully-- but it’s different this time, because Max isn’t like Sully.

“Hey, wanna see something real cool today?” Max asks after Sam stopped laughing and had enough time to catch his breath. “I found this thing--”

But the younger boy doesn’t finish his sentence, because Dean is suddenly in the room, messing Sam’s hair playfully and smiling at his little brother. It’s good to have Dean around-- he’s funny and nice and Sam wishes he could see Max too, because they all would have so much fun together! Well, at least Sam thinks so.

“Hey, short stuff.” Dean smiles a bit more, adjusting the old leather jacket around his body. He’s going out and Sam wonders if he’s meeting with some random chick he’s just met. “Dad called. He’s going to be a few weeks late.”

“Okay.” Sam shrugs. It won’t be the first time Dad’s taking a long time to come back, but for the first time Sam wishes he’d take a bit longer. He doesn’t want to move again. He can worry about this later. Dean is grabbing his keys and almost reaching the door. “Where are you going?”

“I need to buy some stuff. Wanna tag along?”

Sam stares at Max for a second, wondering if this things he’s found will be more interesting than going into town-- but his friend isn’t paying attention to him. Max is staring at Dean and he has this really weird expression on his face, bordering on creepy. Sam frowns. It’s not the first time Max acts weird around Dean, but Sam can’t really understand it. Dean is cool-- he believes Sam.

“Nah. Max’s going to show me something nice.” Sam says, and Max just nods softly, still eyeing Dean.

“Okay. You guys behave and don’t leave the house. I’ll be back soon.”

“I don’t like him.” Max says suddenly after Dean leaves. “I really don’t like him.”

Sam just shrugs, because he doesn’t know how to respond that. Dean is his big brother, his best friend and he loves the guy. Maybe Max is just upset because Dean can’t see him like Sam-- but he’s not going to think about it right now, because Max is grabbing his hand and pulling him up and then upstairs, towards an old room they don’t use a lot.

There are some broken toys inside a box Sam’s never seen before. Well, the house is huge and there are a lot of things that belonged to the previous owner, and Sam wonders if they’ll ever get rid of it but maybe they won’t, because it’s not like they’re staying here forever. It makes his mood drop quickly, and Max stares at him as if asking what’s wrong.

“I’m just... we’ll be moving when Dad comes home and I don’t want to.”

“You can stay here with me.” Max just shrugs, blue eyes shining in a very strange way. “They don’t care about you. I do.”

“Dean cares about me, a lot.” Sam frowns. Maybe Dad doesn’t really care too much, always in the road and working, but Dean is always around taking care of him and making sure he’s happy and healthy. “We’re best friends.”

“That’s why he keeps lying to you? All the time? He’s not your best friend. I am!” Max’s face is dark, and somehow it seems like the temperature around them dropped a good degrees all of sudden. “I don’t lie to you. Hey, maybe if we hurt him, your dad will want to stay here longer to take care of him!”

Okay, something is really, really wrong now. It’s okay if Max doesn’t like Dean for some random reason, but this-- this is just too much! This is wrong and he won’t hurt Dean, no matter what Max says.

“We should try, Sammy!” Max says again, but he just sounds so wrong and twisted that Sam almost backs away. “You’ll stay forever if we do this! When he comes back, we--”

Sam shakes his head. He won’t do it, he won’t hurt his big brother-- and suddenly there are cold fingers wrapped around his beck in a bone-crushing grip, cutting his air supply, strangling him. It happens so fast Sam panics and he just can’t move, can’t push Max away even if he wants to, he can’t even breath. His head is spinning and there are dark spots dancing on his vision--

“Sorry Sammy...”

And then there’s darkness.

“Hey--” Dean calls him suddenly. They’ve already finished cleaning the mess back at the rogue witch’s house and are safe back at Sam’s place. He’s edgy and he just won’t stop walking in circles around the room. Sam wonders, for a second, if cursing Dean into quietness is such a bad thing. “We’re still a good team.”

“I guess.” Sam shrugs, putting a crystal back in its place before moving to close a book. He’s not sure of what Dean is thinking, or what they’re going to do now so maybe he should leave things clean for Jess when she comes home. “So... are you calling Dad or--”

Dean finally stops on his tracks. Sam shudders at the warm hands on his back, touching, testing-- then he’s closer, arms wrapped around his body and pressing soft kisses against his shirt. It’s been so long and Sam wants nothing more than let Dean take him here and now but they have so much to talk about, to deal with.

“I don’t suppose you’re going to...” Dean sighs and moves away at Sam’s lack of reaction, indicating the table still full of witchy stuff. “Stop this, right? Okay.” He says softly when Sam just shakes his head. “What do you say about... coming back?”

“To hunting?”

“To me.” Dean’s voice is so soft he almost sounds like he’s begging. Sam’s breath gets stuck in his throat in a very painful way. “I don’t... I quit hunting, if you want. You can even keep your witchy mojo or whatever. We stay out of radar. Just...”

“That’s not fair. You love hunting, Dean.” Sam tries to argue but Dean just shrugs. “You’re unbelievable, you know that? Fine.” And Dean’s face brightens so quickly Sam almost stops himself from talking. “But there’s one condition.”

“Anything.”

“You come live with me. Here.” Sam says softly, but Dean is nodding long before he finishes his sentence, smiling so widely Sam wants to kiss him until he’s out of breath. “Okay. Find us a case. I’ll pack.”
