A spy is tasked with infiltrating a knight's inner circle and gaining his trust. He does a little too well at pretending to be the knight's friend, and the "fake" friendship rapidly gets out of hand as the knight falls HARD for his mark. The knight makes him want to care and have hope for the first time in years, and that terrifies him. He's supposed to be better than this, too smart to fall for his own lies.
So, naturally, the only solution is to betray the knight and ruin everything, like he was supposed to to begin with.
