There's a tonne more, but I think those are the relevant ones to the conversation.

First off, it's okay to both HOPE and LOSE HOPE. It's normal, as long as you – ugh I hate this phrase but it's most descriptive –"manage those expectations"; be HAPPY if it is announced, but don't be a douche if it never is, because like one of y'all said, S4 really had a finale feel to it, and it really felt like they were trying to pitch another show about Mary or James Bond or something. I have a lot more negative, more gossipy thoughts, but I'll omit them from this answer.

Essentially, while I DO hope we'll get one some day, if only to correct whatever the heck S4 was, I DON'T want to give anyone false hopes that it WILL happen. I've worked in media nearly half my life, and EVERYTHING going on is all clickbait and shitposting because we live in an age where likes and clicks are more important than factual news, and until we hear an official announcement from a Studio or Network, we need to just take those nuggets as grain of salt. ALL past seasons WERE announced by the BBC AND Pinewood, THEN by Moffat hours later, THEN by any networks picking it up for international distribution. As I've said in the past, Moffat KNOWS Sherlock The Brand™ gets him clicks and whatever money he wants, so he will tease it until he's bored of it.

A narcissist wins a few Emmys and suddenly he thinks he's god's gift to television.

BUT given the general disinterest in a Season 5 from everyone involved (Ben and Martin nearly cringe every time S4 is brought up), actor schedules being booked right through to 2025 at the EARLIEST, the websites tied to the show have elapsed and expired years ago, I think we won't get anything more than a one-off special again as a 20 year anniversary or something, after the bitter taste of S4 has become a distant memory in the public's eye.

And, personally, I think it's better they leave it be. Yes, I love the show, and would love to see it continue. It was really something special, and one that brought together people in ways I've NEVER seen in any fandom I've been in before. But I think the problem with Sherlock WAS Mofftiss; they got too full of themselves, thought they could do no wrong, and did their experimental "The Mary Show" and James Bond spinoffs with a MAIN SERIES SHOW, destroying everything they had all because they were petty that people guessed their plot lines, so they literally tanked their own show just so they could have a "Shyamalan twist".

Okay, that last bit is pure speculation, but I can't help but feel like that's what it was when they shat on fans, especially Johnlockers, every chance they got.

SO TL;DR, no, I don't think we're getting another season, at least not within the next 2 years. 2026 is the Earliest I guess unless they officially denounce an S5, but 2030 for the 20 year anniversary. That's it.

I'm sorry, all, if that's not what you wanted to hear. I don't think it would be responsible of me to hype it up as happening either, since I certainly don't have any inside information.

Speculate! Theorize! Write stories and meta! HAVE FUN! That's the fandom experience, and staying on that baseline of reality, I've learned, is MUCH better for your mental health. Just don't expect Mofftiss to deliver any time soon. Sherlock tells us always to look at the facts, and the facts show that it ain't happening anytime soon.

BUT I could be wrong, and I'll happily go back to theorizing and speculating more often again. For now, Fandom is where I think is the "level" place to be. You're welcome to this blog if you think a new series will happen tomorrow, just don't shit on people who don't think it is. Post S4 was a goddamned nightmare, let's not repeat that. Fandom should be fun, not draining. <3

about the hiatus, do you think that the show would ever return?

I've talked about my thoughts on this very recently, actually, on this post here!

Basically, I don't think it's beyond the possibility, nor am I opposed to it, but right NOW within the next couple years, I don't think so. Just everyone involved seems a tad uninterested, and lots of scheduling conflicts and such.

I dunno. I really DO hate feeling pessimistic about it, but at this point I worry that if it comes back, they're going to act like S4 was good and continue the story from there without explanation. We'll see.

At this point, I'm content with indulging in fandom :)

Okay so this is going to give me an opportunity to finally get this off my chest, just know that I am NOT upset or angry at you, I’m upset and angry at the “journalists” who keep doing this shit every few months. So, as I keep saying and will always say:

It’s all clickbait. All of it.

I checked to make sure, and this was my first result. Look at the headline:

Notice the wording in this one… None of it is “BBC Confirmed” or “Moffat confirmed”. They’re using speculative words like “teasing”.

Scroll down the article:

There is no official release date for a new series of Sherlock but we can expect the show to arrive in either 2022 or 2023. 

This “journalist”, among many others, is literally just fucking trawling tumblr blogs and pulling information from people like our little corner here who have already done all the fucking work for them. 

The second link I got brought me here, posted just before Dracula, and is LITERALLY just rehashing the shit they recycle every 6 months. Summary is: We don’t know, but please click and subscribe to our website for updates.

I’ve worked in the media, at 4 newspapers, for almost a decade. This shit is normal when it’s a slow news month and they need fluff pieces (which Jan and Feb usually are dead news wise when you want to ignore what’s going on in the world), they go through what gave them clicks this time last year, and assign some intern to just drudge up some “news” clickbait article that they can get some advertising dollars on. Sherlock still gets clicks, ergo, let’s BS an article.

And because they’re using words in the article that doesn’t confirm nor deny anything, and use words that are synonyms with “allegedly”, it’s all completely legal and not fake news. It’s ALL in the language of the article. Carefully read any article about S5 and NONE of them use words that are synonyms with “confirm” other than “so and so confirmed they want to do an S5″ and that’s where the sneaky bit comes in… notice “WANT TO DO” not “ARE DOING”. It’s all about grammar.

Literally this and other articles are just clickbait garbage that is all speculations of stuff we as a fandom have all made on all of our recent S5 posts. It’s only coming up BECAUSE we have been talking about it here on Tumblr and then that brings up the topic in Google search algorithms.

I find it rather interesting that, since I’ve been answering asks recently on my blog about S5, and after I and others replying to my posts are doing all the bloody leg work, that all of a sudden these “writers” are SUDDENLY just talking about Sherlock again. Gee what a coincidence :| Do your own research,  “writers”, stop beating a dead horse with this clickbait crap and stop taking all our work.

So the TL;DR answer to your question is: No. Don’t freak out. It’s not happening anytime soon.

They’re literally just taking advantage of Sherlock being still semi-relevant to make money in a slow news month. Until you hear it from Moffat, Gatiss, possibly BBC, Sue Vertue, Hartswood Studios, AND (not OR, AND) the actors themselves, don’t believe a damn thing. It’s not happening anytime soon, either, I feel. I’ve done a tonne of legwork already: Ben, Martin, Gatiss AND Moffat are ALL busy for the foreseeable future: Moffat and Gatiss are writing stage plays, and Ben and Martin both have busy IMDb schedules for the next 2 to 4 years. And they’re the only ones who matter (because let’s be real, without Ben, there’s no Sherlock), so… I’m sorry to be blunt and harsh, but sometimes we have to step back out of the bubble of Tumblr and look at reality for our own sanity.

Why are people saying that s5 is confirmed? I don't get it. I've run into several blogs freaking out over it, but like, Moffat didn't say anything. The BBC didn't say anything. Unless I'm missing something...? All I've seen so far is another website looking for clicks (one of those websites whose article title is some shit like, SEASON FIVE RELEASE DATEEE) saying that according to everyone's schedules, 2022 is a possibility. Steph, have I missed something???

AHH sorry I totally missed this ask when it came in and pretty much already answered this in an ask I just recently posted. The Too Long; Didn’t Read version of that ask is “Slow news month means clickbait titles that will show up in the Google Algorithm”. Those sites are LITERALLY “journalists” whose research consist of trawling Tumblr blogs to see what we’re saying and then just stealing our posts and writing articles around those. I just find it very curiously coincidental that all of a sudden, ever since I replied to various asks relating to when I and our little circle thinks S5 will air / film starting at the beginning of the year, these “journalists” all CURIOUSLY COINCIDENTALLY come up with all the exact same answers as we do. Granted, it’s not super hard to find any of the information that I did find, but it is interesting that our renewed interest affected the algorithm enough that clickbait sites thought it was trending enough to clickbait the fandom again. It’s gross, honestly.

So no, you haven’t missed anything at all. They’re sites that are plagiarizing content from small bloggers and trying to capitalize on the renewed interest in the few left who want more. Until you hear it from Ben, Martin, Moffat, Gatiss, AND the studios / distributors, don’t believe a damned thing. NONE of them have confirmed ANYTHING, and a quick google search will tell you as much on their IMDb’s and Guardian articles that all of them are busy for the foreseeable future. It’s funny that they’re coming up with 2022, because WOW HEY that’s what I speculated a little over a month ago, that 2022 would be the EARLIEST for filming… How the turntables, Intern-who’s-following-my-blog. 

So yeah, Nonny, don’t click on ANY of it, they’re counting on your need for a resolution to pique your interest. Check the sources before you click: I’m more apt to believe something from BBC.co.uk or The Guardian, than the Daily Fail or Express.co.uk. But even then – and this is speaking as someone who knows the ins and outs of even a reputable newspaper from personal work experience – the “valid” papers will put out clickbait in slow news months to meet their quotas. Like I said, wait until it’s confirmed by ALL the important players first, THEN the news articles can be an afterthought.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't want s5 to happen. Like, at all. I didn't really like s4 and the ending was kind of open-ish so, I don't know... I feel conflicted

Oh, you are ABSOLUTELY not the only person who doesn’t want S5; I’ve had a lot of questions and discussion happening on this blog this past month and a lot of people have expressed the same trepidation that you have. I’m mixed on whether I want S5 or not; I will watch it and go back to theorizing if it happens, but my heart is telling me that logically speaking, we’re probably not getting an S5 in the near future, and I’m surprisingly okay with that. I think it’s because of the utter disaster that was S4, and the fact that I fear that S5 will pick up where S4 left off rather than go the way of “it was fake” and try to salvage what they have with or without Johnlock. I personally despised the ending of S4 (the fact that Mary had the last word of the series pisses me off to no end and she ruined the montage), and it felt like a hollow way to end a season / series. I dunno,

But no, you’re definitely not the only one. I know people have come to me in private and have talked to me about their feelings about S4 and how they feel about S5, so it’s not a “just you” thing. I’d rather it be left alone and to the fandom’s loving arms than to have another S4 fever dream.

You’re not any less a fan (THERE IS NO SUCH THING, “less of a fan”, by the way) just because you are, and I really dislike the gatekeepers who think you can’t have an opinion on a series if you feel it was genuinely terrible. Considering that I read your recent post on Season Five, this isn't a good question because you already kind of answered it, but do you think there is much of any chance at all that they (Mofftiss) are trying to confuse us and drive us away from the idea that maybe, just maybe, we will get a surprise or they already have it alllll mapped out or something like that?

Sorry for the delay in a reply... I drafted this with a link to the post as soon as I saw it come in so I knew which post you were referencing, and then it got lost in my ridiculous amount of drafted asks LOL LOL

ANYWAY, I’ve discussed this idea before in the past under the ‘secret episode’ tag, and most recently on this post here, and I’ll mirror my response with that one: I’d like to hope so, with the possibility of it airing around the 10th Anniversary in July, with it made up of deleted/secretly filmed scenes from all the seasons or S4, and will play out as the TRUE S4. That’s what my heart wants.

My head, on the other hand, REALLY doesn’t think it will happen. They’re not “trying to be clever”, that’ I’m very certain of... they were genuinely shocked that S4 got such a poor reception, and they couldn’t believe everyone disliked TFP. They literally were going to nominate TFP up for an Emmy until the reception of it was so poorly received and they did TLD instead. That’s ego, not cleverness. When S5/secret episode is announced, if ever, of COURSE they’re going to say “yeah we planned it like this all along”... no one likes to admit they’re wrong, least of all someone like Moffat.

Now, I do believe at one time they did have something all mapped out with the idea of Johnlock in mind, and I do think that Ben and Martin at the very least believed they were playing a Gay Sherlock / Bi John dynamic. Something happened along the way, whether it was studio or BBC interference, certain people not wanting it to go that way because of their ridiculous jealousy / desire to be made famous like Ben and Martin, Mofftiss’ egos, or pettiness about the fandom made up of primarily of people Moffat has a history of shitting on figuring out TAB before it aired, we will never know unless someone says something after an NDA or something expires.

I really REALLY do get why people want there to be more... S4 felt like such a slap to the face of the fandom, but sometimes we have to step back and look at things logically. Being a fence sitter like myself is fine, if only because we need to keep our mental health in check. Staying too deep into it to the point of gatekeeping and being a right arse to anyone who doesn’t “believe” is really unhealthy and worrisome. It’s okay, Nonny, to hope and to believe, it really is, but for your mental health, know that if nothing happens around the time of the anniversary in July 2020, we’re probably not going to see much of anything Sherlock-related episode-wise until 2022 the EARLIEST, and that’s just based on checking everyone’s IMDb pages.
