Crowley and Gabe never met in the show but if they both survived until S14, they would literally bicker over Sam, and both would try to flirt, and do some unhinged but cute stuff
Like bringing Sam books he likes, new tech and other stuff, rescuing him like he's a damsel in distress (they might or might not have created the danger themselves but it's beside the point)... which would make Sam very confused because whatever they're doing?...
OF COURSE it's all a joke. Of course it's an elaborate prank. Of course it's THEIR bickering and their sexual tension and eww Sam doesn't want to think about it. Because maybe Gabriel just wants to impress Crowley and Crowley tries to make Gabriel jealous by flirting with Sam. Maybe it's them two having a love/hate, angel/demon thing going on. Doesn't involve him in the slightest.
