“Come here, let me look at you.” Lucas knelt down and and straightened out the little boys jacket for him before running a hand over his hear to mess it up a little. “You over comb, I swear. It’s just first grade, kiddo. You’re gonna rock it. Okay? I know you struggled a little last year but we’re here to help, no matter what/” Lucas looked over the nervous looking boy and sighed. “Liam... What’s wrong? You were excited to go yesterday. Wednesday will be there too if you need her. Your sister isn’t too cool yet, promise.” He tried to joke but William just pushed up his little glasses and pouted.
“What if they make fun of me?” Liam’s little voice asked. At six years old he was still kinda small. He was introverted and was very quiet which had made Lucas wonder if he had developmental problems socially. He’d struggled with kindergarten and seemed to go back and forth with being excited about being in ‘real school’. He had glasses and asthma and was small. Lucas could see why he might think people would make fun of him but he didn’t want his son to be scared of living.
“I’m not going to lie to you. Some kids are assholes... don’t tell your mom I said a bad word. Some kinds might say mean things, they might do mean things. While you should never let them get away with it, sometimes kids do mean things because they don’t have a good home life. They don’t have a cool mom and dad like you and Winnie do. But... Even if they do say mean things, what do I always tell you?” Lucas smiled at his son as he watched him fix his hair. Where he got the neatness from Luke would never know.
“...Steve Rogers was small and had asthma and a whole bunch of other things and he grew up to be Captain America.” Liam recited as if he’d said it a bunch of times. Lucas laughed and ruffled the boys hair.
