~Thanos in the Infinity War art book Part 12: concept art by Roberto Castro (1, 2-bottom, 3-top) and Pete Thompson (2-top, 3-bottom)~
SANCTUARY II
Thanos doesn’t possess the Space Stone... yet. As a result, he has to get across the universe the old-fashioned way: by spaceship. His preferred mode of transportation, the hulking Sanctuary II, was first seen during the mid-credits scene in Thor: Ragnarok.
“Sanctuary II is Thanos’ spaceship“, Concept Artist Roberto Castro says. “So Charlie [Wood] and the Russos wanted to show Thanos’ personality and power in the design. They wanted something between a sanctuary and a warship, so the challenge was to find that balance between both worlds -something aggressive but sophisticated. It’s a huge flying fortress and a refined high-end flagship. Also, they did not want traditional technology for it. We stayed away from the traditional metal plating and tried to create a new surface for it. It looks like something made in ancient times, like a flying piece of jewlry.“
“I think the final design is successful because it’s easy to read and it has simplicity“, Castro says. “The design looks a massive helmet. It’s aggressive and defensive at the same time. It’s a balanced design -very horizontal, symmetric, and elegant. When you look at Sanctuary II, you look at something unique, almost like a handmade spaceship built centuries ago“.
Hiding out. Going in.
Did they ever say what/where/why was the sanctuary?
The first night in Sanctuary is long and lonely. Fog settles in the cracks and crevices of the ruined neighborhood and Jackie’s unable to sleep. Night in the wasteland is unnaturally quiet and impossibly dark. She misses Nate. God she misses him so much it feels like the bullet’s lodged in her chest. She can’t breathe. It’s not real. It can’t possibly be real.
She sits in the frayed and dirty chair within Shaun’s rooms with no idea what the hell she’s doing. How does she move on from this? There is no getting over it. Her chest desperately aches to crawl back up the hill, into the vault, and into her husband’s arms. Nate was the sun that brightened her world and she doesn’t know how to live without him.
It should have been her. Perhaps she can seal herself away within Nate’s pod. Pretend it never happened and sleep until the world stops turning and time ceases to exist. She means to stand, to get up and walk away. To where she’s unsure but instead she stays right there, with her head in her hands, until morning’s first light trickles in through the broken windows.
The day begins anew and Jackie is reminded, despite the devastation, the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west.
