John Walker held the baby like he was afraid of startling her.

It was almost jarring, the careful way he supported her head, the way his shoulders stayed tense as if he expected someone to yell at him for doing it wrong. 

He stood near the window where the afternoon light fell warm across the floor, rocking in the smallest, barely-there motions. The baby blinked up at him, curious, one fist curled against his chest.

From the doorway, you watched without announcing yourself. Bucky was beside you, silent, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but attentive.

Alpine sat on the back of the couch, tail still, eyes locked on Walker like she was evaluating his soul.

Walker’s gaze dropped to the baby’s face, and something in his jaw loosened. His voice came out quiet, almost embarrassed by its softness. “Hey there,” he murmured. “You got a good set of lungs on you, huh?”

The baby cooed in response, and Walker’s mouth twitched as if he didn’t quite remember how to smile without forcing it.

“I used to…” He paused, swallowing. His eyes flicked away to nothing in particular, like the thought had grabbed him by the collar. “I’ve got a kid. Back home.”

Bucky shifted, just slightly, but didn’t interrupt.

Walker’s thumb brushed gently over the baby’s sleeve, careful and slow. “He used to fall asleep like this,” he admitted, almost to himself. “Right on my chest. Like I was… like I was the safest place in the world.”

The baby’s fingers caught his shirt, and Walker went still, breath catching for a beat.

“I don’t see him as much as I should,” he said, voice rougher now. “Not as much as I want.”

Alpine’s ears flicked forward, listening. She didn’t hiss. She didn’t move. She only watched, alert in a different way than usual, as if she’d decided this wasn’t a moment to interfere with.

Walker looked down again, blinking hard. “You’re lucky,” he whispered to the baby, though it sounded like he was saying it to himself too. “You’ve got people who show up for you. Every day.”

The baby yawned, then settled, her cheek pressing into his shoulder.

From the couch, Alpine blinked slowly.

Walker exhaled, the smallest release of tension. When he finally glanced toward the doorway, he caught you and Bucky watching, and his expression tightened like he’d been caught doing something too human.

Bucky didn’t smile, but his voice was quiet and even. “You’re doing fine.”

Walker nodded once, barely. Alpine’s tail loosened into a slow, thoughtful sway.

And for the first time since he’d walked in, the room felt peaceful.
