Too Late

475 word One-shot Speed fic thing I did when a certain someone was sharing ideas for my fic for @weevmo and then this came into existence when it went out of control.

Adoption AU setting: Flug had gotten kidnapped and Black Hat doesn’t take it well. Once he actually gets to him though. He doesn’t get anything good.

The jammed door finally gave into Black Hat’s kicking, it went flying and splinters scattered across the floor.

“FLUG!” Black Hat yelled, looking around the pitch-black room, the only light available was the one streaming out of the door. Black Hat walked into the room and looked around frantically.

In a dark corner, Black Hat saw a sprawled out figure, thin and small in body shape. A few steps away from him was a discarded paper bag. Black Hat’s eyes widened as he recognised who was lying there.

“Flug! Thank Lucifer!” Black Hat exclaimed, as he got closer to Flug.

The child didn’t move.

“You just had to get kidnapped, didn’t you? Are you alright? Did he hurt you?”  Black Hat said as he squatted down. Damn, the room was darker than he thought.

The figure didn’t answer.

Black Hat frowned and shook Flug gently, and gentle became rough when Flug didn’t react.

“Flug? Flug! Kid, come on don’t be like that! Come on, do something! Say something! FLUG!”

Black Hat shook the child’s shoulders, but still getting no reaction. When he withdrew his hands, it was covered in a sticky, coppery substance. Feeling sick, he tried to find the wound. When he reached Flug’s hair, he could feel blood and flesh on his scalp mixing in with his hair, a big dent in his head.

Black Hat blanched and he went to check for a pulse, flinching at how cold the skin was. After a few moments that felt like forever, Black Hat’s world came to a grinding halt.

The child was cold, eyes closed. There were no signs of a pulse.

Flug was dead.

“No,” Black Hat rasped, this couldn’t be, this can’t have happened, this couldn’t.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, Flug, no, no you can’t— You can’t do this to me! Flug, Flug you…”

Black Hat pulled the limp body closer to him, clambering to get a proper hold on his dead child.

“Flug, you id...” Black Hat felt something in his throat cut him off, “you idiot, you… you couldn’t… I have… You have… kept … I could have…”

It took a moment for him to find out that thing inside his throat was a heartbroken sob.

Black Hat didn’t bother wiping away his stream of tears as he held the body closer to him, choking on his words.

“You just needed to… needed to… hold on…just a bit longer and I could have… you would be... “

He rocked slightly as he held Flug’s dead body, drowning in his loss and grief.

Black Hat knew that Villains didn’t cry. Villains don’t do that, it showed weakness, it lets people get to you. Villains don’t cry.

But Black Hat didn’t think himself as a Villain at this moment.

He thought himself as a Father that had just lost his child.
