The latest updates on Waymo cars center on a 

voluntary software recall and continued expansion into new cities. 

Key Updates

Software Recall: Waymo has issued a voluntary software recall for over 3,000 vehicles (specific 5th-generation models) to address an issue where they failed to properly stop for parked school buses in Texas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the incidents after nearly 20 reports from the Austin Independent School District.

Waymo has already updated the software in all affected vehicles and will continue to monitor performance.

Expansion: Waymo continues to aggressively expand its testing and operations across the U.S. and internationally.

New Manual Testing Cities:In December 2025, Waymo began manual test drives (with a human present) in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.

Fully Autonomous Expansions: The company recently introduced fully autonomous (driverless) service in Dallas and is planning to launch service in additional cities in Texas and Florida in 2026, including Houston, San Antonio, Miami, and Orlando.

International Plans: Waymo vehicles are also now driving in London as part of preparations for commercial service in 2026, and the company has applied for permits to operate in New York City.

Rideship and Safety Data: As of mid-2025, Waymo was providing over 250,000 paid robotaxi rides per week across its operating cities (Phoenix, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta). Waymo data indicates its autonomous vehicles have fewer injury-causing crashes compared to human drivers in similar areas, though regulators are closely scrutinizing recent incidents.
