These are pictures I took in four prefectures in Japan.

Travel is fun because all impressions are different.

My first townscape in Gouache ever! A picture of the village Okawachiyama in Imari city in Saga prefecture. This town is Japan's village of secret furnaces and kilns. Hence I think Mt. Tonglu might have a little brother here xD

Character designs from 2018's Saga Prefecture x Gintama collaboration "Sagaharu Project" for Saga's Sagaprise campaign.

Sleazy producer Sakata-P promotes his dog as Saga's newest mascot. Sadaharu is wearing a mudskipper hat and a strawberry collar, sits in an Akita ware bowl, and is eating a riceball made with rice and seaweed produced in Saga. The name tag reads "Sagaharu".

There were Gintama-themed food, hot spring promos, a recording featuring Gintoki, another of Hijikata and Okita (promoting local mayonnaise and seaweed), and special regional goods. There was even a statue in front of Saga Station.

Katsura, in Yayoi period dress, was of course on standby at Yoshinogari Historical Park, ready to help with the PR campaign. Will Elizabeth get a statue, too?

Congratulations to Saga Prefecture for winning the Japanese Prefecture Flag Wars!

This beautiful flag received a lot of support from my followers, and for good reason. We will eventually see it again, alongside the flags of many other subdivisions, in the Regional Flag Wars. However, the next tournament will be the 2023 New Czech Flag Wars, which will start later this week.

Seeing as my last life update was a year ago, here's a check in on where things are post JET, omikuji style:

🪩Job - I left my job at the dept. of health and found a job in the field I majored in during college (PR). Selling my experience on JET was HARD as someone who didn't want to pursue a career related to Japan/education. I applied for many jobs, faced a lot of rejection, and leaned hard on my network for leads. My advice to outgoing JETs is to keep building those skills and really think about how to market what you did in your time in Japan. A lot of companies are totally unfamiliar with the program and it's up to you to educate them on it and sell the positives.

🪩Health - got into therapy, addressed my eating disorder, and after some very severe reverse culture shock and depression, I really feel like I'm in a much better emotional place.

🪩Studies - I am still studying Japanese and I'm considering grad programs now (not Japanese but something that lines up with my interests in diplomacy)

🪩Friendship - I'm excited to say I've built up a community here in Seattle. That was the hardest part of leaving Japan and my small town. I felt like at any moment or day in Imari, I could reach out to my friends and have something planned. There's nothing more valuable nor important than a sense of belonging.

🪩Love - I'm in love 😍 with a great person.

🪩General - I moved out of my parents' home, have an adult job, have friends, have taken care of myself mentally and physically, participate in sports and events, and feel like an adult, mostly happy person in the world.

For those reading this at any stage on their JET journey, I write this to say, JET was a huge part of my life. For five years I dedicated myself entirely to the language and culture of Japan, learning from and teaching my students, and enjoying every bit of it. Leaving that was incredibly painful. I left my job, friends, community, home, and everything that had colored my life as an adult in the world. To leave that meant the pains of growth. I think for those of you on your JET journey now, appreciate what you can, understand the temporary nature of the program, and prepare prepare prepare.

Best of 2021 Music #22: FranChouchou “Saga Jihen”

The antics of Zombieland saga,  are not that easy to follow considering the setup and premise of a talent manager dabbling in black magic in order to bring back 7 women of various ages and idol background in order to prop up the declining Saga Prefecture.

But the best episode of the season and possibly one of the five best anime episodes of the year involves the two-part saga incident, which tells the story of Yugiri, oldest of FranChouchous members and  instrumental part in the independence as a prefecture initially.

Along with meeting an idealist and a dabbler in the same ways that would one day bring the legendary courtesan back to life.

And as a closer we get this big band upbeat jam all about Yugiris mindset with her dual lives One in the past as a freedom fighter and the one in the presence having to be the big sister of the group.

And this is going to be a fun want to hear in English once the Blu-ray comes out.

SUM 22: JPOP Swing music never sounded better than a zombie idol sextet bringing it as the legendary courtesan Yugiri is a wonder to behold here.
