BACKGROUND

Elizabeth Shea was born on September 30, 1929. Soon after, she was adopted by the affluent Sarah and John Beckett. 

Despite being raised through the Great Depression, the Beckett family was left all but untouched by financial pitfalls. They would often take part in celebrations at the Ritz, or engage in other luxurious activities. As she got older, Shea would develop a sense of guilt over her family’s excessive wealth. Such feelings would intensify with the start of WWII; living through that, and seeing all the horrors that came with it, left her humbled. 

After she graduated Trinity School, Shea decided to go on to college. It wasn’t out of the pursuit of advanced education that she made this decision. It was to prolong the inevitable; her engagement to a man of her parents’ choice. She went on to go to Barnard College, with a focus on the arts. Despite her motives, she enjoyed her time there greatly. Unfortunately, it had to come to an end.

Upon graduation from college, Shea was introduced to a fellow member of the upper crust, Clarence Walker. They dated for two years, despite Shea’s trepidation, and eventually got engaged. Their engagement was put off for as long as possible before they were finally wed on March 17th, 1955. 

Shea escaped the reception for a moment, and when she walked out onto the terrace, she ended up in Sage Lake. 

OTHER

The Becketts put their children through a lot of classes, such as ballet, piano, etc. None of them really stuck with Shea. She had developed an interest in art, specifically clothing design. Sewing is where her true passion came through; actually bringing the idea together into something tangible was undeniable.

She’s really good with her hands; creating, repairing, building things. She loves that.

She never succeeded with ballet, but she’s still a pretty good dancer.

Except a select few, no one knows her full name. From the moment she stepped into Sage Lake, she’s been known as Shea Beckett.

her upbringing wasn’t exactly typical bc of that, her parents weren’t around very often. she’s one of those nanny raised kids. mommy & daddy issues hello.

she found solace in books & dance, however. her parents may have been absent but they always gave her the best teachers and resources available.

dance was her passion and what she wanted to spend her life doing, but not long after becoming a teen, her parents started taking more interest in her life and pushed her towards acting. the family business, y’know. 

she had no desire to follow that path but she wasn’t about to deny the newfound attention either.

it went well for a time, but long story short, she bailed as soon as she was old enough. she moved to la and found a good deal of success, as both an actress and dancer.

she spent nearly a decade doing that before ending up in town. it never bothered her that much, she adapts well. however, it does bug her that she never got to finish the movie she was working on at the time...

she occasionally misses dancing and acting but actually enjoys bartending quite a bit. it’s different yet fun, she meets many colorful drunk people and gets to be an unlicensed psychiatrist.

BACKGROUND

Born on February 23rd, 1974, to Sylvia and Richard Kingston, Grey was raised alongside her brother in a middle class family. 

They grew up in Los Angeles.

Both Sylvia and Ric were drug using, peace loving hippies. Their life of partying came to a halt when Sylvia got pregnant. That being said, despite having a great deal of love and support for their kids, they were more like friends rather than parents. 

Grey kinda had to be her own parent, and one for her brother as well. Someone responsible. 

Growing up that way, Grey wanted something just for herself. She dabbled in quite a few hobbies and interests, but nothing felt right. Not until she took an art class in sixth grade taught by Mr. Wachowski. She fell in love with painting; it felt like a release of her emotions and frustrations.

She eventually went on to further her studies in art through college. Four years later, and she applied to the San Francisco Art Institute. 

She never found out if she got accepted or not. On her way home from her part time job, she turned a corner and ended up in Sage Lake.

OTHER

The Kingstons had a small garden in their backyard. It wasn't anything fancy or worth bragging about, but it was nice. It turned out Grey had a bit of a green thumb, and kind of took it over. Gardening was cathartic in a similar way painting had been. This is part of what drew her to Ginger's Flower Boutique. It was nice to be around plants again, and it felt peaceful.

Grey wears black, thick rimmed glasses, and has a tattoo of a snake and flowers wrapping around her forearm and wrist

She has a decent voice and is pretty good at guitar.

Technology and mechanics of any kind are not her friend. She is the type of person whose way of "fixing" it is smacking it until it works (or breaks)

BACKGROUND

angel was born into a middle class family back in new york to two hardworking parents who had some trouble conceiving a child. they married young but it took them almost ten years before they were blessed with a lovely baby girl. they named her angel because to the two of them, she was heaven sent.

the young girl had a fairly good childhood with both of her parents showing her great affection. she may not have had siblings growing up, but she always found children in the playground to play with. even at a young age, she was very sociable and people were always charmed by her endless optimism--if not annoyed by it. however, she was around ten years old when her father’s health began to deteriorate due to lung cancer. it only took another year before he finally succumbed to it.

a few months after her father died, her mother decided that they needed a change of scenery since every corner of their house in oslo reminded them of her late father. so, they’ve sold their house and with that money, they’ve decided to drive across the country to find another place to settle down. that’s how they’ve stumbled upon sage lake. it wasn’t in the map at all, but they ended up in the small town and a curious watch appeared in her mother’s wrist which appeared to be a timer of some kind.

it was an exciting new place for the young girl, a lot of unfamiliar faces and a lot of places for her to explore. her mother found a job and a small apartment for them to settle into and angel remained hopeful for a new beginning in their life. four years later and her mother married once more, wherein she gained two older step-siblings. however, it wasn’t all as she imagined it to be since she got along with one of them while the other simply didn’t want anything to do with her. nevertheless, she wasn’t disheartened by that fact and still tried to win their favor.

having protected parents, angel grew up rather sheltered since she was also a sickly kid. just like her father, she also had asthma and strenuous activities could cause her to hyperventilate. her allergies are also all over the place, so she has to be extra careful with what she eats. luckily, she’s not allergic to cats so she has a cat named fairy, a norwegian forest cat and munchkin mix. nevertheless, that didn’t stop her from being bubbly and just being a ray of sunshine. she has a huge heart, but she also wears it on her sleeve. 

angel is a hopeless romantic at heart and seeing the love shared by her parents, she dreams of having that too one day. when she received her watch during her eighteenth birthday, her mother let her in on a little secret--how hers stopped the moment she met her stepfather. the brunette wasn’t sure what to make of it, but she figured that she’ll be meeting someone important in her life as well the moment her watch stops. though as optimistic as she is, she also has a childlike impatience to her that just makes her want that fateful moment to arrive.

WAR & DEATH TW

Rafael grew up in a single parent household with two older brothers. His father died in WWII before getting the chance to come home and meet the newest addition to the family. Things weren’t easy growing up this way, but the tightknit family always seemed to manage.

Growing up, he didn’t have too much to complain about. Sure, his family might not have been as well off as others, but it never seemed to bother the free-spirited kid. He was always too busy running around with the other neighborhood kids and getting himself into trouble with his inability to keep his opinions to himself.

Though he was a bright kid, his family didn’t really have the means to send him to college, so he ended up working a factory job right out of high school. Admittedly, he did have bigger dreams for himself and was disappointed life couldn’t pan out the way he wanted it to. He tried to keep his head up though, reminding himself that things could be worse.

With America’s entrance into the Vietnam War, it was more likely to find Rafael speaking out against it than volunteering to fight in it anytime soon — something that caused somewhat of a rift between him and his eldest brother, who decided to enlist at the time. Though his brother would eventually make it back, the two never fully patched things up between them before Rafael ended up in Sage Lake.

Despite his strong opposition to the war, fate seemed to have other plans for him. The draft rolled around in December of ‘69 and Rafael, who was a year away from being exempt, was drafted into an ugly war he wanted nothing to do with. The year he spent in the war was easily the worst and most influential year of his life — full of never ending horrors and death. 

After what felt like several lifetimes, his year in service was finally over and he was able to return home. Attempting to adjust back to the life he had before wasn’t as easy as he thought it might be — especially when he held onto a lot anger, guilt, and mistrust from the war.

Just when he felt like his life was somewhat returning to a state of normalcy, the rug was ripped out from underneath him again and he found himself in Sage Lake. Once again, he found himself struggling to adjust to his new reality.

These days, Rafael can usually be found at the Bee Balm Pub either working or drinking. With several decades to accept the things he can’t change here, he’s opened up a bit more in recent years, and is at least attempting to make the most of things.

Rafael can be a little rough around the edges, but anyone who gets close enough will come to find he’s actually a lot more caring than he comes across.

He’s extremely ride or die for the people he’s closest to. Like it’s a miracle he made it back from Vietnam with some of the stunts he pulled to make sure the guys he served with made it back okay.

Rafael initially didn’t handle getting stuck in Sage Lake well. It felt like another major choice in life was completely ripped out of hands. He spent a good decade and a half pissed off at everything before eventually accepting things as they were.

Though it’s far more likely to hear him complain about Sage Lake, the place has grown on him. If nothing else, the town has a peacefulness the rest of the world could never seem to offer him.

Definitely a night owl. You’re not going to find him out and about anytime in the morning unless he absolutely has to be awake.

Really used to like going dancing before getting drafted and then getting stuck in Sage Lake. He hasn’t done it much since.

Still listens to a lot of music from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s for the nostalgia. 

Probably not the best bartender to tell all your troubles to because he’s far more likely to offer up a sarcastic comment than helpful advice.

Lowkey probably still has some unresolved trauma from the war, but is very “it’s cool, I’ll just ignore it and it will go away.” :/

He honestly didn’t pay attention to his watch when he first got to Sage Lake, too upset about his situation to care. His attitude has changed since and he’ll subtly check it from time to time out of curiosity.

Found Family: I’m an absolute sucker for these kinds of plots/dynamics. And since Rafael was so close to his family, he definitely misses having a strong sense of family and would absolutely love/appreciate having that type of relationship with some people in Sage Lake.

Friends: Even though he can have a difficult personality to get along with and he doesn’t make it easy to get to know him, he has been in Sage Lake for quite some time now so I’m sure even he’s been able to make a few friends.

BACKGROUND:

Born in Liverpool to a local grammar school teacher and an ex-seaman from the Arabian Peninsula, Amani grew up in a simple household, under modest living conditions. From an early age, she was taught in very strict, disciplinarian fashion by her mother that hard work, perseverance, and patience stood leagues above charm, a silver tongue, or any kind of natural talent. Her father was much less rigid and demanding, but his character and his story — one of much fortitude and forbearance — were enough (to her) to prove her mother right.

Amani matured quickly, trading dolls and games with friends and schoolmates for books and papers her mother brought home from work. Often, she took it upon herself to watch over the house, to cook and clean and keep it tidy when her mother, tired and overworked from the duties of an educator in the 19th century, and her father, forced to take on several jobs to bring the family further up in standing, simply could not.

What Amani lacked in wealth and comfort, however, she made up for in intellect. Her parents made certain to give her the best education a young woman could have had at their time — bought her the best books, sent her to the best schools, gave her the best tutors — and for that, Amani would be eternally grateful.

Painting came as a secondary hobby, one she had picked up long before as a child but revisited only after meeting a fellow student in the then all-girls Bedford College. She’d refused to call it love at first sight, for they’d barely known each other, and their interactions, intermittent and painfully brief, only ever occurred in the art elective she’d taken that semester on a whim — but the spark was simply undeniable. The professor had chosen her to model for them several times, and it was a face Amani never forgot — and unfortunately one she would never see again, once the term ended.

Her unexpected arrival into Sage Lake happened on a cold October evening, as Amani sat comfortably inside a horse-drawn coach meant to take her to see her parents. At the time, Hamid and Inez Karim would have just exited the theatre, buzzing happily together, having witnessed the Liverpool Orchestral Society perform Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 for the first time in history. Had things gone as planned, Amani’s coach would have stopped in front of the theatre, and she would have stepped off, greeted her loving parents by the stairs, and gently ushered them into the carriage. 

Alas, the coachman seemed to have gotten lost along the way.

It’s been almost a hundred and twenty years since her disappearance, and though the thought of her parents waiting for her by the steps of the theatre may never truly stop haunting her, time has smoothened some of these sharper edges. Unfortunately, time has also dulled what passion and ardor Amani must have had for life. She knows she must wait, but the years spent standing idly by, though not unkind, have been long and wearisome, and it’s been more than difficult to keep herself from growing skeptical and embittered. Many around her have found the fruits of their patience, but for her, time in a pocket watch hidden deep within the drawers of a dresser simply continues to tick by.

Frederick was born in Los Angeles, California in 1947 to the large and boisterous Mulligan clan. Fittingly known as the “Golden Boy”, Fred was the eldest of his siblings, though certainly not the most responsible. His family was hardworking and well off, but the hard work didn’t seem to carry through to Fred. Even as a child, he was renowned for being a “Tom Sawyer”--neglecting his chores with a smooth tongue so he could embrace his lazy lifestyle. 

He would rather spend long days strumming on his guitar, eating sweet clovers in the grass. As he grew into adulthood, there was little improvement. A true ramblin’ man, rather than get a job, Fred was content to follow the free-wheeling hippie movement of the 60s-70s, traveling around the west coast in his van and seeking to make it big in his music career. This led to a break with his family, a separation that left the relationship foul, particularly with his younger sister. **wanted connection!

Ever the charming rascal, it didn’t take long for Fred to gain the attention of a record producer, but it would prove to be too late. With the stereo cranked up, Fred sped down a coastal highway, delighted at the news, and (accidently, of course) drove his van off a precarious, rocky cliff. 

When his head bobbed up from the water, his van, and everything he once knew, was gone. Fred was no stranger to roughing it on his own, and took the shock of Sage Lake surprisingly well. Though his van was gone, he did manage to find his guitar lodged in lake mud, and spends much of his time on Chive St., when he’s not feeding hogs and bailing hay for the Rosemary’s.

no way is that SAGE ASHFORD.. they’re a 27-year-old HUMAN notoriously known for being RUTHLESS & IMPULSIVE but there are some people who have seen them being INVIGORATING & ADVENTUROUS. if you ask me, they remind me a lot of a loopy smile and an honest heart, the dizzying sensation of spinning around with little care in the world and sunlight bursting from beneath your skin but that could just be because they’re considered the ADVENTURES GUIDE around town. just keep an eye on them & see if their true colors shine through..

sage's parents learned from a fairly early age that their daughter was a bit of a wild child, they'd find her climbing in tree's that she shouldn't. at one point when she was old enough they actually found her on the roof which of course made them panic.

after that stunt they decided to use their extra money to buy her a play set so she at least had something safer to climb on.

her first broken bone happened around 13 when she fell off the playset (that was arguably too small now) and landed on her wrist wrong

that wasn't going to stop her though however her parents did at that point sign her up for rock climbing classes and began to take her regularly. there she heard about those outdoor zipline ariel parks and BEGGED to go

going to that is what made her realize she loved the thrill of essentially danger (which she'd never admit to around her parents)

when sage was old enough to get a job she got one at the rock climbing place but eventually moved on to just becoming an adventures guide where she could show other people the thrill of it

she doesn't need to travel far for work but her job isn't in dallas, it's only a few towns out of dallas and it's perfect for her, especially during the winter season when the river rafting slows down she goes back to working at the rock climbing facility

she also teaches people outdoor climbing as well even though she likes to do free climbing herself, that she won't teach though, she usually just does it around friends
