❝ No peeking, ❞ Virion says, lips upturned as he guides Emmeryn to their destination, her arm looped through his and his hand resting lightly atop hers. He’s a surprise for her, one he’s been planning for quite some time now, and he would much rather it not be ruined prematurely simply because her curiosity overtakes her. ( Of course, he more than trusts her to keep her word, but… he doesn’t want to take any chances. Not for this. )
Building within his chest is an uncharacteristic knot of nerves, twisting themselves around his heart, squeezing it, releasing it, repeat. As many times as he’s thought of this moment and as much time as he’s spent preparing for it, he can’t save himself from the fear that she will reject him. It has plagued him for days, weeks, months on end. The thought that she deserves better than a debauchee like himself circles endlessly around his head, and he’s glad that he’s asked her to close her eyes else she would immediately know what is amiss. But as much as Virion tells himself that he doesn’t deserve her, he is too selfishly in love to let her go. His heart has already spent too long aching for her, and he could not bear another moment of such pain. So his step does not falter, not even as their feet slow and he guides her to a halt.
Slipping his arm from hers, he takes a step behind her. ❝ You may look. ❞
Encircling them in the garden is a crowd of roses, each a bright and vibrant red, in bloom as full as the love he bears for the woman in front of him. It had taken weeks to get them all here, and a tremendous amount of effort to keep them a secret, and he can only hope that it will all pay off. As he waits for Emmeryn to take in the sight before her, he remains silent, knowing that she is well aware of the flowers’ meaning.
He lowers himself to one knee and removes a small, polished wooden box from his pocket. He waits for her to turn around before opening it to reveal a ring of shining rose gold filigree, inlaid beautifully with three shining opals.
A breath, and he says, ❝ Emmeryn... I adore you with every fiber of my being and I cannot imagine spending a single moment beyond this without you... So I must ask, will you marry me? ❞
