dualities in astrology

the 12 signs are divided into 2 groups of six. each group is assigned a duality. learning about the duality can help get a better grasp of the traits of the signs individually. 

these dualities are referred to as masculine energy and feminine energy, but because of the way society has added gender roles to those terms these energies can also be called active and receptive. the dualities are the most basic form of classification and dictate our most base level of compatibility. you may have heard the classic “fire and air make hot air and water and earth make mud.” the fire and air signs are masculine or active energies and the earth and water signs are the feminine or receptive energies. in my practice, I keep the masculine/feminine terminology not to perpetuate the binary but to speak on energies that are within us all, regardless of our gender. 

the order that the signs are listed is not accidental! below, the signs are grouped by their duality. the true order of the signs goes: aries, taurus, gemini, cancer, leo, virgo, libra, scorpio, sagittarius, capricorn, aquarius, and pisces. notice how the order also goes in a masculine, feminine, masculine, feminine, etc order. knowing the order of the signs can help you pick out the classifications for the signs quickly and conveniently. 

masculine energy: aries - gemini - leo - libra - sagittarius - aquarius

active, direct, energetic, forceful - fire and air

masculine energy is directed outwards. these signs are more active and assertive. the energy is linear. the signs are associated with the day (diurnal). in simple terms, the masculine signs are the fire and air signs. their focus is on the spiritual and intellectual world. masculine energy is associated with yang. 

feminine energy: taurus - cancer - virgo - scorpio - capricorn - pisces

receptive, magnetic, reactive, reserved - earth and water

feminine energy is self contained. their strength is through inner reserves. these signs are more reactive and receptive. the energy is circular. the signs are associated with night (nocturnal). in simple terms, the feminine signs are earth and water signs. their focus is on the emotional and tangible world. feminine energy is associated with yin
