modalities in astrology

the 12 signs are divided into 3 groups of four. each group is assigned a modality. learning about the modalities can help get a better grasp of the traits of the signs individually. these groups are called quadruplicities, because there are 4 signs in each group.

the order the signs are listed in is not accidental! the zodiac starts in aries and ends in pisces. the signs are listed in order by their modality as well! isn’t that cool how everything just lines up? makes it so much easier to memorize. below, the signs are grouped with their modality so it’s not technically in order. the 12 sign order goes: aries, taurus, gemini, cancer, leo, virgo, libra, scorpio, sagittarius, capricorn, aquarius, and pisces. notice how it goes in modality order.

modalities are styles in which the elements can express themselves through. the elements coincide with the four seasons, and each season has a beginning, a middle, and an end. the modalities are that beginning, middle, and end. 

CARDINAL: aries - cancer - libra - capricorn

the beginning 

cardinal signs bring forth power, action, and initiation. these modalities represent the start of the different seasons. aries initiates spring, cancer begins summer, libra takes us into fall, and capricorn starts our winter. cardinal signs are enterprising. since they usher us into each season, they bring a call to action. they want to get things started and get ideas off the ground. cardinal signs can be independent and won’t answer to anyone in pursuit of their goals. they give a certain push. 

FIXED: taurus - leo - scorpio - aquarius 

the middle

the fixed signs bring stability, strength, and focus. these modalities represent the middle of the season, where the power of that season is in full force. taurus keeps things beautiful while spring is in full bloom, leo is a powerful force that comes around when the sun is the strongest in the year during summer, scorpio transforms the landscape as the leaves turn and fall from the trees in autumn, and aquarius remains strong as snow piles up on the hills in the dead of winter. fixed signs are the pillars of the zodiac, they have the power to sustain. their focus allows them to create new ideas and form new pathways. fixed signs are taken seriously. 

MUTABLE: gemini - virgo - sagittarius - pisces

the end?

the mutable signs bring flexibility, adaptability, and continuity. these modalities represent the transitions between seasons. gemini is the excitement you feel as spring turns into summer and classes let out, virgo brings the start of the fall semester a sense of organization as summer turns into fall, sagittarius is the increasing optimism you feel when the holidays approach as autumn turns into winter, and pisces thaws the snow as the animals come back out to birth new life when winter turns back into spring. mutable signs are able to adapt and change to suit new situations, just as we have to adapt to the new seasons as they appear. they go with the flow and tackle whatever comes their way. mutable signs are able to adjust.

dualities in astrology

the 12 signs are divided into 2 groups of six. each group is assigned a duality. learning about the duality can help get a better grasp of the traits of the signs individually. 

these dualities are referred to as masculine energy and feminine energy, but because of the way society has added gender roles to those terms these energies can also be called active and receptive. the dualities are the most basic form of classification and dictate our most base level of compatibility. you may have heard the classic “fire and air make hot air and water and earth make mud.” the fire and air signs are masculine or active energies and the earth and water signs are the feminine or receptive energies. in my practice, I keep the masculine/feminine terminology not to perpetuate the binary but to speak on energies that are within us all, regardless of our gender. 

the order that the signs are listed is not accidental! below, the signs are grouped by their duality. the true order of the signs goes: aries, taurus, gemini, cancer, leo, virgo, libra, scorpio, sagittarius, capricorn, aquarius, and pisces. notice how the order also goes in a masculine, feminine, masculine, feminine, etc order. knowing the order of the signs can help you pick out the classifications for the signs quickly and conveniently.

active, direct, energetic, forceful - fire and air

ARIES: i’m literally nothing like aries astrology is stupid 

TAURUS: one time I read a horoscope in a magazine and it was wrong so now there’s nothing you can do to convince me otherwise

GEMINI: okay how fucking dare you call me two faced and fake!!!! wtf is this fake news bullshit? astrology is bitter.

CANCER: i’m trying to keep my emotions on the dl, and you keep exposing me so no thanks. cancer? don’t know her. 

LEO: okay so I don’t know a lot about astrology, but I do know I’m a leo and I hear leos are the best sign so I’m just going to tell everyone I’m a leo and that I’m the best. sorry I don’t make the rules. I didn’t choose the leo life, the leo life chose me!!!! 

VIRGO: I read books

LIBRA: all my friends think it’s dumb so idk.. it probably is. 

SCORPIO: i’m too complex and different to be described by a sign. i’m an individual!!! plus, you’re telling everyone my secrets and I don’t appreciate it.

saturn is a slow moving planet, therefore large groups of people will have saturn in the same sign. when looking at our slow moving planets in the birth chart, house placement is extremely important because it personalizes the planet more. 

generally, saturn in taurus, gives a persistence. persistence is pretty much synonymous with taurus. with saturn ruling over discipline (among other things), saturn in taurus individuals will learn persistence in accomplishing their goals. there may be themes around investing or materialism, and these are also themes with taurus. perhaps there’s a need to find balance between acquiring material worth and being financially secure. there may be a lot of anxiety surrounding the whole concept of money. with this taurus saturn in the 8th comes a lot of hard times. the 8th house is the house of transformation, among other things. change is going to be a big theme in your life that you need to embrace. taurus despises change, so this can be especially difficult for those with a saturn in the 8th in taurus. allowing and accepting change will bring you happiness and good fortune. refusing to change will be your downfall. change isn’t easy! it’s quite difficult. find that inner determination of taurus and power through.

gemini midheavens need to stretch their mental and communication skills. gemini is a highly communicative sign, so networking is a great strength with gemini mc’s, which is valuable in any career! you want to constantly be learning and increasing your skill set. you have an endless curiosity, so it may be hard to nail down one specific path. you need a career that gives you variety or enough time off to explore hobbies outside of the workplace. also expect career changes, as you may one day find yourself becoming attracted to a completely different career. your aquarius sun is humanitarian and progressive in nature. aquarius is tied to science and technology, you want to see the human race continue to evolve. your virgo rising gives you a need to self-improve as well as improve the world around you. you will put your heart and soul into your work. aries mars gives you the passion and drive to propel you into success. you may be more fond of a career path that rewards you for smaller feats more frequently, instead of rewarding for massive projects spanning a long time period. aries is more interested in defeating short term goals and can get impatient with long ones.

what does having a midheaven in virgo means?

midheaven is an angle on the chart that determines social status, career, and our legacy. it’s the cusp of our 10th house. 

improvement is a big theme with the virgo mc. you have this sense of potential and want to work on improving yourself until you feel you’ve reached this potential. you approach work with a practicality and are detail oriented. these are good traits for work in research, but really anything requiring attention to detail.

So, I was looking at my brother's chart and he has six planets in Scorpio: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Pluto. He is Cancer Rising. run! far away! just kidding. he could be lowkey psychic or something. just know, he knows all your secrets. you can’t pull one over on him. if he gives into that shadow side/is underdeveloped, he’s vindictive, cold, etc. an underdeveloped scorpio stellium can literally be a monster (good riddance to the one who just died, charles manson). however! scorpio is an awesome sign that can be used in a positive manner just as any other sign. scorpios are determined, focused, really great at investigative work. they’re intense in everything they do. extremely passionate individuals. scorpios will ride or die for you, but do not take advantage of that because the scorpio will never forgive you. 

be there for your brother! scorpio has themes of transformation and he may go through a lot of rough times in life. scorpios can tend to feel isolated and misunderstood. don’t let him isolate himself and make an effort to show interest in his interests. scorpios appreciate effort from other people.
