The Best of the Companions

How Much Ibn 'Umar Used to Follow the Sunnah

Nāfi’ said: “Ibn ‘Umar used to follow the traces of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in every place he prayed. The Belief of the Early Shī'ah

Ibn Shawḏab narrates from al-Layth b. Abī Salim who said: “I encountered the early Shīʿah in al-Kūfah. Who is a Companion?

“And they unrestrictedly refer (to the companions) as he who saw the Prophet ﷺ then he is a Ṣaḥābī (companion). This is understood to be the one who reached the age of tamyīz (differentiation), then the one who did not reach the age of differentiation, then the attribution of sighting (the Messenger ﷺ) is not affirmed. The Companions Were All Trustworthy

“The Saḥābah (Companions of the Messenger ﷺ) due to their completeness have a distinction, which is that you do not ask about the trustworthiness of any one of them. Rather that is an issue which is settled, due to them being completely trustworthy because of the texts of the Book and the Sunnah and the consensus of those from the Ummah whose consensus is held in regard.”

الثَّانِيَةُ: لِلصَّحَابَةِ بِأَسْرِهِمْ خَصِيصَةٌ، وَهِيَ أَنَّهُ لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ عَدَالَةِ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ، بَلْ ذَلِكَ أَمْرٌ مَفْرُوغٌ مِنْهُ، لِكَوْنِهِمْ عَلَى الْإِطْلَاقِ مُعَدَّلِينَ بِنُصُوصِ الْكِتَابِ وَالسُّنَّةِ وَإِجْمَاعِ مَنْ يُعْتَدُّ بِهِ فِي الْإِجْمَاعِ مِنَ الْأُمَّةِ.

أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ – صلى الله عليه وسلم – قَالَ « يَتَعَاقَبُونَ فِيكُمْ مَلاَئِكَةٌ بِاللَّيْلِ وَمَلاَئِكَةٌ بِالنَّهَارِ ، وَيَجْتَمِعُونَ فِى صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ وَصَلاَةِ الْعَصْرِ ، ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ الَّذِينَ بَاتُوا فِيكُمْ ، فَيَسْأَلُهُمْ وَهْوَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِمْ كَيْفَ تَرَكْتُمْ عِبَادِى فَيَقُولُونَ تَرَكْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يُصَلُّونَ ، وَأَتَيْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يُصَلُّونَ Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Angels come to you in succession by night and day and all of them get together at the time of Fajr and Asr prayers. Those who have passed the night with you ascend and Allaah asks them, though he knows everything about you, “ In what state did you leave my slaves?” The angels reply: When we left them, they were praying and when we reached them they were praying.”

You people do things today that you regard as less significant than a strand of hair, whereas we, during the time of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – used to consider them destructive sins.

Anas b. Mâlik – Allah be pleased with him, Al-Bukhârî in his Sahîh, Chapter on sins that are seen as insignificant but which should be kept away from.
