All Dressed Up by Saint-Juniper
Rose Luck in Flutter Valley by Saint-Juniper
Holy Fools
I have been reading a lot about holy fools for thesis, and I think they might just be the strangest group of Saints ever. I don't understand them in the slightest. But what I do know is that they rock. People say that Saint Francis may have been the greatest Holy Fool, but I am not so sure. Granted, the man did some crazy things... like stowing away or preaching naked or taking off his clothes in the middle of a courtroom. But what about Saint Jupiter? On the way to a convent the man came across a see-saw, kicked one of the kids off and took his place. Saint Juniper then continued to see-saw until everyone got fed up and left. He was teaching himself to be despised, which is admirable, I suppose. But really? This is how he chose to do it? Kicking a child off a see-saw? Well... alright... If that suits you. Mad props. And then there is Saint Simeon Salus. This man was absolutely nuts. Yes, that was a pun, you'll see later. He did pretty much everything a 'good christian' shouldn't. He tried to cure a blind man by putting mustard in his eyes. He ran naked through the women's bath house. He would jump and flail and fall on the ground and thrash around. He would scoot around town on his bottom. He would stick out his foot and trip someone running. He would walk into church and extinguish all the lights. He threw nuts at the priests during mass. He threw nuts at priests. He would flip the tables of pastry chefs on the way out of church. He did all of this. And he was a saint. He was humble and loved the poor. He lived in shame with them. He healed the sick and fed the hungry. He never disregarded a single soul. Perhaps he knew better than I ever will the grace bestowed on the foolish and the humble. This grace was on him and he did miracles.
Blessed are those who love much. And Saint Simeon Salus, Holy Fool though he be, loved more than I can ever hope.
