How to be more comfortable with seeing aspects of Satan and the Devil in Catholic folk magic and Christopaganism
I really didn’t know how to title this and I might change it up but mainly this is focusing on how to work with saints, Christ, Holy Mother Mary whilst accepting the duality of Satan or Lucifer. This is for people who probably work with Satan and Christ at the same time are wary and uncomfortable of aspects seeing Satan/Lucifer as an ultimate evil through a Catholic lens and ideology. If that makes sense.
For instance St Michael defeating Satan
Now say you want to work with St Michael but often you’ll see this depiction and symbology that he defeats the devil or Satan which is true for strong minded conservative Catholics but this can be seen differently for those who feel as if it’s uncomfortable working with Lucifer/Satan and having a statue or picture of St Michael.
Here’s how to look at it differently that fits in a Catholic or Christian perspective. Satan is to Christians embodiment of evil opposite to what is good and holy. He represents all things evil and wicked aspects but he is more than just King of Hell and physical being in Hell he represents all things evil in the world. Evil caused by humans, spirits, anything or anyone with a conscious sense of what evil is. Instead seeing St Michael destroying Satan see him as destroying Evil whether that be Evil caused by humans like murderers, injustices, criminals, wrongdoings, treachery, etc or even to ourselves or evil spirits or energy not necessarily Satan cause that picture can represented by a evil spirit not necessarily Lucifer/Satan. See it as triumph over Evil and Wickedness rather than Lucifer and the Devil it’s symbolic than anything.
When speaking prayers regarding St Michael protecting us from the devil or satan, replace it with Evil or when saying Satan you are meaning Evil not the deity or spirit being represented.
Not just St Michael but also my favorite is Holy Mother Mary.
In Catholic and Orthodox theology Mary is able to repel evil by crushing the head of the serpent. As her being the “new Eve” from the passage in Genesis 3:15 where God proclaims that the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent’s head, this more used by apologetics and historical evidence of Jesus birth and his coming. But it gives a sense of how Mary is perceived as a protectress during spiritual battles. But again the serpent was never named as Satan or Lucifer just the snake or serpent which can be represented as evil or temptation. Using depictions or phrases can mean Evil and not Satan. Popular song Grapes of Wrath or Battle Hymn Republic used during the American Civil War talks about ending slavery was a holy rite and what Jesus Christ advocated for it used Mary’s descriptive words “Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel.” It shows the importance of how much Woman plays in a role against evil. Serpent in this case is slavery and people who rebelled since people back then of abolishing slavery used the Bible to help end slavery despite being used by enslavers to justify slavery. Regardless that sentiment goes beyond that Satan is just a winged demon beneath the earth more so he is symbolic representation of what Evil is and represents in the world.
To summarize: Satan is a representation of Evil, used symbolically in your practice by not seeing Satan being conquered but Evil itself and what it represents like evil that human beings commit like murder, treachery, heinous acts, people who wish harm, etc, even to ourselves also spiritual acts like curses, harmful spirits not necessarily demonic or Satan but spirits that can be harmful or negative, negative energy, etc. even destroying obstacles and challenges that you may be facing that are blocking you.
Conclusion: it’s totally okay to be uncomfortable if you are working with aspects of Satan/Lucifer or you are someone who works with Catholic folk magic in some way feel uncomfortable with how Satan is depicted in the Catholic Church but you want to work with aspects of St Michael or Mary or Christ or any saint there is a way. I’ve felt it before till I reshape my thinking of how one would see Satan than what the church wants you to see. You just have to look past what is being shown outright to what it’s really representing. This is just my perspective and people may agree or disagree but I’ve realize it helped my understanding a lot when working with both entities. I focus a lot on Catholic folk magic since that’s what I have the most understanding in but if you’re Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, any of Abrahamic faith in all kinds you can certainly use this interpretation as well.
