Hot take but I think witches need to be more concerned with the curses they unknowingly place on themselves than whatever harm a spirit, a deity, or another witch might cause.

In old hoodoo and Latin folk records, the first instruction was never action. It was containment. Emotion was acknowledged, then set aside. Because feeling revealed the imbalance but law determined the response. The work was never done in heat. It was done after clarity returned, when the field could be read clean. There were rules about proximity. Rules about what could remain attached to you. Rules about what must be placed elsewhere so it would stop interfering. Some things were grounded. Some were sent back to where they originated. Some were denied entry without confrontation. The elders taught that when order is restored, nothing needs to be chased. Nothing needs to be threatened. Nothing needs to be named. What does not belong cannot stand. That is why the work endured. It moved through law, not emotion, law does not explain itself. When divine order moves in, what was never meant to remain doesn't leave, it fades.
Inspired by traditional hoodoo and folk law as documented by Catherine Yronwode, Paper in My Shoe
I think a lot of the time the online talk about protection is overdone and fear-mongering. I don’t mean that protection in itself is overrated, it is a good tool to have. But oftentimes online discourse feels as if witches have to build this castle to protect themselves from baneful energies. I’d argue that most of us will never be hexed in our lives. And to argue online that this will 100% happen and protection is the only form of help against that is fear-mongering for new practitioners. I wish we would instead talk about how seldom one gets hexed.

Sigil work : "This Area Is Protected"
Hey everyone! Along with the new 'Minor Deities' series I'm starting, I'm also going to start posting sigils that I make as I step further into witchcraft! Feel free to comment, reblog or use. (Please be sure to credit me unless it is for personal use!)
: "This area is protected"
» ․ 🧙♀️ !! ˎˊ˗ Intent
This sigil is made for protection. The intent behind it, put simply, is "This area is protected." It was made using a sigil wheel on Procreate. I decided to make the design somewhat loopy, while still keeping a 'sharp' aspect of the sigil.
In more detail, I made this sigil with the intent to use it during rituals. Any sort of ritual. It can be drawn on the ground, displayed on the wall, burnt on a piece of paper (however you take that statement) or just in the general vicinity of your ritual/offering/prayer/altar space.
It can also be placed in any area, such as your bedroom, house, garden or any other place you can think of. It's supposed to banish negative and hostile energies, since I was suggested by @flamingwitchery and many other people to start by looking into protection magick.
» ․ 🌈 !! ˎˊ˗ Color association
I also played around with color magick in this symbol, as it is a quick and easy way of doing magick without making it too obvious. This is because I am in a highly Catholic household and I don't know what my parents' reactions will be, so I do not feel safe telling them about this yet.
The color association is black and blue. Black is on the outside to banish harmful energies and hostile or negative beings or feelings. Blue is on the inside for general protection, and is also intended to be for my Goddess, Lady Athena.
Of course, if you use this sigil, you absolutely do not have to keep the colors I've used here. Use the colors that speak to you the most--and the colors that you will use will likely vary based on what you intend to use the sigil for.
» ․ 🕯️ !! ˎˊ˗ How to use this sigil
Since I made this with an digital art app, my original intent was to keep the sigil intact and within a space, constantly emanating energy and intention.
However, if anyone draws this onto paper (or any other substance), you can use or activate the sigil in other ways. Here are some suggestions!
Destroy or burn the sigil when you want to use it. This will release the energy and intent you have put into the sigil.
Hide it or tuck it away. This will allow the sigil to work in the background as you continue with your life.
Place it on your altar. This will let you know that you are protected whenever you see it, keeping the sigil charged with intent.
Gather things that you relate with your intent. This isn't necessarily using the sigil, but I do believe that it strengthen the effects of it.
Again, use this sigil however you'd like--within the bounds of the protective intent it was made with, of course--and I hope that you enjoy! Khaire, may your path bloom with prosperity, may the spirits and Gods light your way and have a nice day!
Cleansing, Reversals, and Calling St. Martha.
This isn't a Hoodoo working perse but some of these ingredients for this bath are used in a traditional hoodoo bath and if you follow me you'll recognize some of them.
This working is a bit of New Orleans voodoo one, it's used to not only reverse the bad but to protect you while your doing it and afterwards.
COFFEE & REVERSING OIL SPIRITUAL BATH
Ingredients: 1–2 cups used ground coffee or coffee grounds. This is used for “drawing out” negativity.
1–2 teaspoons Reversing Oil
Optional: a handful of blessed salt (sea salt or Epsom) for extra cleansing. It can be blessed by a lay person or yourself saying the 23rd Psalms.
Prepare The Bath: Fill the tub with warm water. Mix the ingredients: Add coffee grounds, salt, and herbs to the bath. Add Reversing Oil: Sprinkle a few drops into the water while focusing on the intention: “All negativity, harm, and bad luck leave my energy and return to their source harmlessly.”
Recite Psalms 23
Soak and visualize: Enter the bath and soak for 15–20 minutes. Visualize dark energy being absorbed by the coffee grounds and leaving your body.
RINSE (optional): You can rinse off in plain water. To give you that fresh energy.
After The Bath: Dry off naturally or air dry if possible, and imagine yourself wrapped in protective, golden light.
Step 2: Reversal Candle (Neutralize & Send Back Negativity)
Dress The Candle: Rub a few drops of Reversing Oil to your candle. Set intention: Focus on sending back any harmful energy safely. You can use a prayer or affirmation like: “All negativity, harm, and bad luck directed toward me return to its source. I am cleansed and protected."
Light the candle in a safe, undisturbed place. Meditate or focus for 10–15 minutes, visualizing harmful energy leaving your client and returning to its origin.
Let the candle burn safely for several hours, or extinguish and relight daily until complete.
Step 3: (Protection & Empowerment)
In New Orleans voodoo we also used Saints and St Martha is a good one for protection.
Now in this last step you could follow up with a St. Martha candle ritual to seal the reversal and invite positive energy or use a protection candle with protection oil with the 23 Psalms.
But for this post let go with the Saint
Place her candle on a safe surface, ideally on a small plate or altar. Light the candle and focus on their intention: “St. Martha, powerful helper and protector, remove all harm and misfortune from my path. Turn every obstacle into blessing and guide me in strength, peace, and victory."
You can meditate quietly for 10–15 minutes while the candle burns. If burning the candle fully is not possible, they can let it burn for a few hours each day until completed. Offer a simple gift afterward (like water or flowers) and thank St. Martha for her guidance.
