Today we celebrate the martyrdom of the Hieromartyr Lucian of Antioch. Saint Lucian was orphaned at the age of 12 and so he distributed all his possessions to the poor and sought guidance from the confessor Macarius in Edessa. Here he learnt the scriptures and the ascetic life. Having excelled in virtue and preached the gospel to the Jews and pagans, he was ordained a presbyter (priest). He opened a school in Antioch which taught the Holy Scriptures and how to live a virtuous life. He even corrected mistranslations and heretical additions to the Greek Septuagint. During the persecution of Diocletian, Saint Lucian was taken prisoner for 9 years where he encouraged his fellow prisoners not to give up the good fight. Just before his death, the holy presbyter wished to receive communion for the last time, and so, bound to a spiked bed in chains and shackles, he performed the Divine Liturgy in the prison, using his own chest as the Holy Altar. The day after when the soldiers went to see if the Saint was alive, he confessed three times, "I am a Christian" and then his soul departed to the Lord. The soldiers threw his body into the sea, however two dolphins miraculously brought it ashore where a pious Christian took the body and buried it. The Honourable Saint Helen built a church over where his relics were buried. Today we celebrate the Holy God-crowned Emperors and Equal to the Apostles, Constantine and Helen. It was under Saint Constantine's rule that the Edict of Milan was passed, stating that Christians could practice their faith freely without being persecuted. This edict was enforced throughout the whole Roman Empire, both East and West. Saint Helen, his mother, went to the Holy Lands and found the Venerable Cross of Christ, building 365 churches around the Holy Lands (one for each day of the year) and renewing the then destroyed city of Jerusalem. Because of these two saints, the course of Christianity changed forever. Today we celebrate the finding of the Holy and Precious Cross of Christ by the Holy Empress Saint Helen. In 326AD, Empress Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, journeyed to Jerusalem in order to rebuild the city and to erect churches on the sites associated with the life and passion of Jesus Christ. As part of her journey, she wished to find the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified. Having inquired with many people, her search lead her nowhere. She happened to come across an elderly Hebrew man who told her that the Cross was buried beneath the pagan temple of Venus, according to tradition. The Empress ordered the destruction of this pagan temple and found a patch of sweet smelling basil. She and her men began to dig at once and found three crosses. To find which was the True Cross of Christ, the Patriarch Macarius ordered that the dead man from the funeral procession passing by be laid on each of the crosses. As soon as he was laid on the Cross of Christ, the dead man was restored to life. Thus, the people came to believe that this was indeed the True Cross and glorified God. With great joy, the Empress and Patriarch exulted the Cross on high for all to see and to venerate.
