i love the horror/gothic attention appalachia is getting, but some of it's kinda silly lol. we don't lock our doors half the time around here, it's generally an incredibly safe area. i have packages out on my porch by a road for 6+ hours with no one ever bothering them....i have a camera but still lmfao that's for cheaper home ins :'))
you can go into the woods alone, but if you don't know where you are you're gonna get turned around and it's gonna be bad. people do legitimately go missing in the mountains like crazy because of this. we also have terrifying cave systems that people think are all fun and games...they're not, they can suddenly drop hundreds of feet with no warning. check out the lost sea, its local and real neat and creepy. we also have a lot of quarries that have had some unfortunate accidents.
BUT the natives, mostly cherokees in my area, have always had a lot of stories about the mountains, and those are the only ones i care about tbh. there's really only a few of them floating around that i'm personally familiar with: spearfinger, w*ndigo, and moon eyed children have been the only actual myths, other than the mountain man/squatch that i can remember being told about. i have never heard the whistle in the woods at night stuff though, there's a lot of other areas of these here mountains with stories though. hearing your name being called when you're alone is definitely a thing, but i have no idea where it came from...i 100% believe that shit, but think it's more of a leftover imprint of the person saying your name than anything bad or evil.
anyWHOMST. this was a ramble with no beginning and no end, just random info since half my muses live in rural yeehawville (make sure you're sayin that vull lmfao), and are semi-conected to a weird town that i made up based on where i grew up and where i currently live...which are neighboring cities woooo moved so far :'))
also you should love those l0sers. >:)))
