A first attempt at writing. A little something for Sajhuin and Sloane (who belongs to @haonqq ) and they last days at school, sponsored by that one ask. “Mirsten? But it's basically on the other side of Eskria!”
The Enforcer before them looked up from his many papers: student files, documents, and, most important for Sajhuin now – first-year assignments. The mild exasperation on their face had been there as long as they’d known him. It was probably from having to deal with rowdy Hunter youths and every piece of documentation this youth caused.
“Other side from what exactly, Hunter Ahkaya?”
“From..”
They bit their tongue. They weren't stupid. And it's not like it was a grand secret that students who were close to each other were often assigned to different places. They knew that. Camaraderie was welcomed, but other bonds were discouraged if not prohibited.
Yet here they were - aced their exams, received brilliant recommendations, and prepared to face any sort of creature out there.
Barely holding it together from the mere thought of leaving her, not seeing her and talking to her every day, possibly not seeing her ever again. They shook these thoughts away.
“Is there anything I can do to appeal your decision?” Their tone was calm and even, the kind that people take seriously.
“In fact, you can. Answer this question truthfully and I most certainly go through a lengthy and time-consuming procedure of writing you a new assignment and approving it with the higher-ups.”
They clenched their jaw.
“On your left is a rabid werewolf, about to maul a civilian--no, let's make it five civilians. On your right, this werewolf’s mate is about to rip Hunter Addington's head off clean. Which way do you run?”
“I..”
“Which way, Ahkaya?”
“I will do my duty and save five innocents over one Hunter.”
“I thought so. Good luck in Mirsten.”
They took their documents, regarded the Enforcer with a barely there nod and opened the door to leave. Their hands were shaking slightly with frustrated anger.
“So what’s the golden student got?! My money is on you going to the Capital!”
Standing near the window was Sloane, the morning sun making an amber halo around her hair.
“Are you ready to part with your first paycheck then, Sunshine? Because I’m going to a lovely Northern town, equally rich in mud and pixies.”
They turned to their right and walked towards her, a smile on their face.
