“Stuffed Animal”
“Oguri!” Ango called out after entering. There had been no use for knocking on his door after his first couple of visits. Oguri always seemed to be annoyed by a knock more than anything. Ango dumped the groceries unceremoniously on the step before working on removing his dress shoes.
Oguri rounded the corner, a pen in his hand. “Ango. You’re a half-hour early.”
“My apologies,” Ango said, glancing at his watch to confirm. He’d been rather fast grocery shopping for once. “Today is busy for me.”
Oguri sighed, disappearing around the corner without offering to help with the bags. “I keep telling you not to bother.”
Ango shouldn’t bother. Oguri was under house arrest, not on vacation. But Ango really couldn’t help but offer to do something as small as this. Oguri tended not to eat much of the food given to him by the government and Ango wasn’t about to let him starve. Besides, Ango was mature enough to admit that he wanted to see Oguri every chance he could. He wasn’t mature enough not blush at admitting it, but at least he was honest about it.
He carried the bags to kitchen table and pulled out the items one-by-one. Oguri watched over his shoulder, making sure that things were the proper brands and whatever else he was specific about. He didn’t reject anything, which made Ango relieved. He pulled out the last item and looked out of the corner of his eye to see Oguri’s reaction.
Oguri stared at the small toy blankly. “What’s this?”
Ango felt like a fool for even getting it, so he had hoped Oguri wouldn’t ask. Still, he pushed the stuffed animal over. “It was free after a purchase of a specific price. I don’t need it, so I thought I’d bring it to you.”
“Why accept it anyways?” Oguri asked as he picked up the toy. Ango was surprised he touched it at all and it made him think maybe getting it wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
“I make it a habit to not turn down free things. But if you don’t want it—“
“I’ll keep it,” Oguri interrupted, placing the small thing in the breast pocket of his suit jacket.
Ango couldn’t help the upturn of his lips at the sight. He’d never seen Oguri latch on to something so quickly and it made him… happy. “Fine, then about that sauce you asked for…”
Ango was pleasantly surprised when he next arrived to find the stuffed animal by Oguri’s bedside. The time after that, he found it on the table next to Oguri’s manuscript, and after that it was back in his pocket. In fact, Ango never saw it out of Oguri’s reach, and that made him smile. It was the best purchase he had ever made.
“First Touch"
Ango always seemed to cry in front of Oguri. He didn’t know why, and to be perfectly honest he felt a little guilty for it. It wasn’t Oguri’s responsibility to make him comfort him. However, their friendship was very give and take. For every time Ango broke down in front of Oguri, Oguri had break down of his own. Those moments of vulnerability were what brought them together in the first place.
“I failed,” Ango said, gripping his glasses tight in his fist, “People keep dying because of me.”
Oguri was quiet while he vented. Listening was all Ango needed.
“And I’m gonna fail the Armed Detective Agency, too, and my subordinates, and—“ Ango stopped himself, the tears slowing as he realized what he was about to say. His mouth went into a thin line, biting the word “you” back. He looked down into his lap, willing the tears to stop. There was too much flowing out of him right now. If he wasn’t careful, he was going to reveal too much
The feeling of a hand on his cheek made him take in a harsh breath. With an unbearable softness, Oguri’s thumb rubbed away the stream of tears. The touch made Ango completely incapable of moving. He could only stare down at his hands as the tears stopped abruptly.
His skin was burning. Oguri had never touched him before, and now that he had… Before he could stop himself, he leaned into Oguri’s hand. The tears started to flow again and Ango let them. Oguri wiped them away as they fell.
“Pencil” (sakaguri)
drabble challenge words: 158
Oguri looked at the pencil disapprovingly, studying it with intensity. Ango watched in half-hidden smitten amusement until Oguri finally handed it over, clearly deeming it ‘sharp enough’. “Thank you,” Ango said, trying to keep the smile both out of his voice and off his face. He turned back to his work and found that the sharp pencil didn’t make that much of a difference. But, if it kept Oguri around…
Ango snuck a glance to him, delicately reading a book and looking far more handsome than he had any right to. Ango sucked in a breath and Oguri’s eyes moved to him. “What?” Oguri asked.
Ango’s brain rushed to formulate an excuse. “Thanks for the pencil,” he managed with a blank expression. He held up the pencil lamely, feeling like a fool.
Oguri gave the pencil another look, and then he sighed and leaned forward with his hand out. “Now it’s dull again.”
Ango let him take it.
