Wearing Memories: Tapestry Maxi Coat
They say you always remember your ‘First’ and I certainly remember the first time Bill Cunningham took my picture. It was the winter of 1972, and I was walking into Henri Bendel. The store was then on 57th Street off 5th. I was a fashion assistant at Harper’s Bazaar at the time and was wearing a fabulous tapestry maxi coat by Anne Klein purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue (I still have it, still fit into, and still adore it). A wiry who I did not know took my picture and I did not know where it would wind up. Not too long afterwards, on February 17th I appeared in WWD in a spread, ‘On the Streets of America’ featuring what women in Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, and New York were wearing. I have subsequently appeared in his New York Times ‘Evening Hours’ and ‘On the Street’ pages almost 100 times. Most memorable, on February 11, 2001, he devoted an entire 18 picture spread to me, which he called ‘The Color of Money: In the Bank”.
