Thought I read somewhere here that Sal has an accent similar to an Appalachian accent? If I read that correctly, it only adds to that scene where Elise said something about Sal not sounding like they can't read. It seems kind of similar to how mountain accents are regarded, like having one makes you less intelligent to those who don't. Growing up in the Appalachians, we were encouraged to downplay or get rid of the accent before college because of that.

You did read that! Sal’s accent is based off of my family’s accent and my own experiences with my Southern accent. I wrote about it in this ask (and sorry it took so long for me to answer you; it took me a while to find this ask).  I’m sorry people judged you so harshly just for that. That it exactly what I was thinking about during that scene. I went through speech therapy and sort of had my accent trained out of me and grew up hearing that “lose it if you want to be taken seriously.”
