When you matched cocktails to BLs the other day, it reminded me of all the colorful cocktails in Thai shows. Do you know what they are--especially the Windex-Blue drink? They can't all be drinking Blue Curacao, can they?

They might be using blue sala syrup. Or they might be using butterfly pea syrup (nom anchan AKA นมอัญชัน).

Most BL watchers are familiar with the red sala syrup, that's what turns pink milk pink. It's meant to taste like palm fruit (it doesn't much).

But there are actually 3 popular flavors: dang (red); kieow (green) which is cream soda flavor; and (mali) or jasmine which is clear/slightly yellow. There are a lot more, these are basically like italian soda flavorings they just put them into milk.

I think there is also a blue version.

King in the scene where he meets Ram with the others at the cafe, and learns Ram's name, is drinking either blue or green milk. I can't remember witch and I'm too lazy to investigate.

Butterfly Pea is a common colorant in Thai food, it's in a lot of the deserts in Until We Meet Again

It turns Chor-Muang ขนมช่อม่วง blue/purple. Also Bulan Dan Mek ขนมบุหลันดั้นเมฆ. Pandan is also used as a colorant for green things. Unlike butterfly pea it does as quite a bit of a flavor (a sort of grassy fragrant vanilla).

But honestly?

Blue Curacao is cheep and easy and widely available, so it's probably that.

hello! if you're from the philippines or if you have filipino followers, where can i buy sala syrup? i bought it last time but it's the last stock. idk when will they restock :(((

I’m not from the Philippines, so I really have no clue. Here in Europe you can find the syrup in Asian supermarkets, and sometimes in regular supermarkets if they are big and have an Asian food section.

But maybe some of my followers know? (I’ll also reblog this on my main blog, in case anybody there knows)

BL trope du jour

PINK MILK 

Pink milk is pretty ubiquitous in most Thai BL series. Technically it’s origin for association with BL, originated in the original y-novel of 2 Moons. However, most international watchers are familiar with it from SOTUS. 

After watching SOTUS and both 2 Moons installments I got curious. Here is how to make pink milk or nom yen.

Ingredients:

Sala syrup - c 1tbsp

Condensed Milk - c 1tbsp

Fresh Milk - 1-2 cups

Ice cubes 

How to make:

Fill a cold glass with ice cubes. 

Pour over Sala syrup and condensed milk.

Add the fresh milk. 

Stir all the ingredients together.

This is to taste. I would say start with 1 tbsp of Sala, 1 tbsp of condensed, to 1 cup of milk. It was very sweet to me so I ended up leaving out the condensed milk all together. If you can’t taste the sala add more, or if you like things sweeter. 

Sala Syrup

Sala syrup is reported to be very “sweet, tangy, floral, and a little bit smoky.”

Pink Milk is often made with Hale's Blue Boy Brand sala syrup which is artificially flavored to approximate the taste of the fruit of a branchy palm tree that's native to Thailand.

My Pink Milk experience

I ordered from Amazon and got "Hale’s Blue Boy Brand Sala Cider” and mixed it with whole milk and ice, no condensed milk. It was already quite sweet enough. (From what I can tell “cider” and “syrup” are the same, but I could be wrong.)  

It tasted and looked a lot like cactus fruit juice (aka tuna) for those who have had that.

It’s very sweet with almost no sourness to it. Tastes slightly like bubblegum with a touch of watermelon and strawberry. It has no acid component at all and only a hint of floral. I didn’t get the reported smokey or tangy.

I can see why it might be thought of as a childish drink, it reminded me a bit of birthday cake flavoring, ice cream bean, or cotton candy.

That scene in Until We Meet Again where Pharm is serving Dean breakfast in his condo for the first time and he puts out a carafe of water and there are little flowers floating in it? What’s going on?

Update on my experiments with Sala syrup: pink milk with cocos milk! Maybe Perth said in it in his video or I read it somewhere that you can add cocos milk.  It is indeed damn nice.
