Tonight's salamander vigil was a resounding success.

Non-amphibian highlights:

when I got to the first pond, a deer (which I couldn't see, but evidently he could see me) made a couple attempts to scare me away--but I never heard him leave so for all I know he might have spent an hour and a half watching me, like a creep

my flashlight (phone) ran out of batteries two steps before I got back to the trail after the last pond (although I had to cut my survey of the last pond short because my phone was running out of batteries, which is a huge shame because I was able to stand in one spot and see about 20 salamanders)

with the lights now off, for the latter half of the walk through the woods back to my car, the coyotes felt free to talk to each other... a lot (I suspect that even in the dark, and even though they had numbers in their favor, they were still more scared of me than I of them)
