There were many islands off the coast of Southeast Asia. One of these, the Saliendra dynasty, built great temples and monuments on their native island of Java. One of these architectural treasures, Borobudur (pictured above), was dedicated to Buddhism.
Eventually, the Saliendras fell to another powerful kingdom, the Srivijaya. The Srivijayas’ economy flourished by taxing the trade that passed through their waters. They also established a capital for their kingdom on the island of Sumatra. This capital became home to many Buddhist teaching establishments.
