I wish trans and non binary healthcare was a more general thing and not its own subset of healthcare that providers can opt in and out of as they wish. Especially because I wish they’d make the effort to understand that some of us want an atypical transition. Not all of us want to transition fully in either direction. We should be able to play around as we wish and see what works for us. Other people shouldn’t have so much power over what we do with our bodies.
I completely agree! There should be mindful bodily autonomy for all, particularly minorities who need it. The state of trans healthcare in the UK is laughable (because if you don't laugh, you'll cry.) Nonbinary healthcare in the UK simply doesn't exist, let alone anywhere else. The extra hoops nonbinary people have to go through to explain ourselves to binary cisgender people leads to many more roadblocks at the final destination of getting hormonal treatment, leading many to have to simplify their existence for binary comfort. If nonbinary people transition in the UK, we are automatically issued a new NHS number and gender certificate that is the opposite of our AGAB. How outrageous. The social binarisation of our transitions is also outrageous, with binary trans people also engaging in bioessentialist and sex binarist thought that completely isolates medically transitioning nonbinary and intersex people.
This let alone with salmactive and nullsex bottom surgeries being scarcely known about and mocked within the trans community (calling it mutilating. How's that for ironic!). And all this is ignoring the horrific waiting times, the debates, the forced unexistence or hyperexistance, the not being taken seriously, the being taken as a joke that all trans people experience. And on top of this, people thinking nonbinary means non-dysphoric or non-transitioning or not wanting to medically transition. Goodness gracious, it's a lot.
I feel your idea would revolutionise queer healthcare in the West. We should be free to choose what works and what doesn't for us. It is possible with enough noise made, it is possible with organising and education. It is possible, by any means necessary.
