Salmokji: Whispering Water (2026, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Lee Sang Min
Mini-review:
I finally had the chance to see what the hype was all about. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table, but the execution more than makes up for the lack of originality. Lee Sang Min knows how to play with the audience, to the point that you can never truly know when something is or isn't real. He also tries to innovate with unusual camera effects that make for pretty cool shots. Oh, and all the night scenes are well shot, thankfully. It just needed a stronger sense of aesthetic and it would have been visually excellent. The cast is also up to the task, which helps with the immersion. Overall, Salmokji: Whispering Water is a supernatural horror movie that knows what it's doing.
Watched Salmokji, it has some great shots and nice scary moments but the story was so bland... there was nothing really driving characters and they just felt so bland, and earlier tension died as soon as the youtuber couple became the victim. It would be a fun movie to go to movie theaters for and forget later (and there's a great entertainment value in that! That's not a minus) but just not my cup of tea.
With that said tho some of the earlier shots including the 360 road cam thing? Amazing... And the sense of confusion you feel when the characters were being tricked into water, with the snap transitions and shot choices were so great! I just wish the tension and mystery carried through the second half of the movie with more attention to characters.
