right, but f.e. Juve and Milan are the most supported italian teams internationally, yet Juve for bought some of its scudetti, Milan is associated with (moderate) right wing politics; they've got supporters from everywhere. still i won't judge them.

yeah, and that’s valid. the thing about spanish football is that real madrid has a polar opposite: barcelona. of course barcelona isn’t perfect, but if we’re talking purely in terms of image, they have a rep for being left-wing, anti-francoist, etc. and when it comes to choosing a sports team, image is everything.

i don’t know enough about italian football to say, but there might very well not be a successful left-wing club in italy. and at that point, yeah, ok, you root for who you root for. but for spanish football in particular, there is a direct alternative. 

so yeah, i can’t pretend that my distaste for madrid isn’t informed somewhat by the existence of barcelona.

Good point, but using sports as propaganda it's something that was very popular in Europe. I'm italian and the nt was used by Mussolini to build the idea of a strong country. I'm not saying it's ok, but it's a fact.

yeah, i don’t doubt it was widespread. and i certainly wouldn’t try and stop you from supporting the italian nt--like, that’s your team, that’s where you’re from. besides, i really don’t believe in assigning characteristics to national teams the way i might to club teams, for several reasons: the xenophobia that can easily arise, the enormous diversity of any given country, political changes, etc. 

really i’m just talking to foreign fans who have no connection to the team they’re supporting--like, if you have the option, i really don’t get why you would actively pick a club with an ugly history. uglier than average, at least.

like all i’m saying is if you’re starting with a blank slate and can pick whichever team you want i personally would not pick one that has a generally right-wing fan base, that was used as a propaganda machine for a fascist dictatorship less than 60 years ago, and that has a policy of building moderate success by throwing exorbitant amounts of money at whichever player is shiniest and newest.

obviously every club has some shit in its backlog, and there are some legitimately great and admirable things about real madrid as an institution, and the majority of rm fans are perfectly decent people, and these are all important and relevant distinctions to make--but again, if you’re starting from scratch, i don’t get why you wouldn’t want to avoid a club with a widespread perceptional connection to fascism. 

just my opinion though!
