Hey guys! I know I have been M.I.A for a LONG time and I am so sorry about that. School has gotten crazy busy now that I am a senior. Nuts right?! I am going to try to get back to being more active here, but something I have always stood by is that school comes before a lot in my life since my education is very important to me and so is graduating. I did want to share that I am currently listening to "Salt, Sugar, Fat" by Michael Moss. I am absolutely loving this book! A couple years ago a documentary called @fedupmovie introduced me to the world of food and the food industry. Ever since I found out the astonishing truth about our food I have been obsessed with this story and state of food in America as well as in other countries. This novel has been a tremendous dive into that world with stories that will blow you away. I can't wait to finish reading SSF and continue my exploration of books on food! I am such a nerd for all of this 🤓😄 • • #saltsugarfat #bookstagram #audible #michaelmoss #book #currentlyreading #love #foodindustry #fedup #nonfiction #booklover #bookworm
Finally reading this one on a 10+ hour road trip each way. #nutritionnerd #saltsugarfat
Don’t Get Fooled!
How Food Companies Try to Trick Us (And How to Fight Back)
Studies show that there are four main factors that influence our food choices, for better or worse. The bad news: Food companies know about these four things, and can use them to manipulate us. The good news: We can stand up and fight back, one forkful at a time.
1. Nutrition
We want to make the best food choices for our bodies - to keep ourselves healthy and to fuel ourselves right. Yet knowing what, when, where and how much to eat can feel like a puzzle. To make matters more confusing, foods are often marketed to us as healthy, when, in fact, they aren’t doing us any favors. To appeal to our nutrition-mindedness, processed foods are touted as “low-fat,” “all-natural,” “high in vitamins and minerals,” or given any number of trendy labels without actually packing nearly the nutritional punch that whole foods do.
Food marketing and ‘health’ labels are confusing and overwhelming, but don’t get fooled by the hype! We can bypass the processed foods, and head to the produce aisle. Building our diets on whole, plant-based foods is the best way to ensure that we make the most nutritious choices every time.
2. Convenience
We lead busy lives, and with our packed schedules, food often seems like one more thing we don’t have time for. Fast food chains and food companies cater to the all-important convenience factor, but most convenience foods fall dismally short in the nutrition department.
We believe that eating well should be convenient and nourishing. There is a better way. With a pot and a pan, and a few clicks, we can make the healthiest choice the easiest choice.
3. Cost
Processed and fast foods may seem like a good bang for our buck, but relying heavily on them often comes with hidden health costs down the road. On the other hand, when we’re hungry and in a hurry, we make last-minute decisions about dinner that can quickly ruin our best-laid food budget (take-out, anyone?).
Good food doesn’t need to be fancy, and we can eat well without breaking the bank. Taking a few minutes to plan out our meals for the week ahead saves us time, money and trips to the grocery store.
4. Taste
We want to eat tasty food. We deserve it!
Though it may sound like a conspiracy theory, it’s true that much of the food we eat has been engineered to appeal to our taste buds. In pursuit of what tastes good, loads of salt, sugar, fat, and chemical additives make their way into our diets. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can break away from these addictive foods and turn towards health, without sacrificing taste. Whole foods, herbs and spices always pack nuanced and delicious flavors into every bite.
These four factors drive our food choices, but - believe it or not - we can have it all. What’s on our plate can be nutritious, convenient, affordable and tasty. With every bite, we can challenge the Standard American Diet, fight back, and fuel a revolution.
Here is a visual difference between the advice given to Australians by their government and what Americans are shown... notice that the US "MyPlate" doesn't even contain pictures. This could be caused by the simple fact that majority of the food we allow on the shelves in our grocery stores is hardly food at all and trying to find examples of REAL food is getting harder and harder for Americans to do since the nation is more for money than it is health, allowing the Billion Dollar food companies like General Foods and Kraft to run the market.
I've been reading the book Salt, Sugar, and Fat recently and it is astonishing to learn about what I've been putting in my body to use as "fuel" for the last 23 years. I am disgusted that it's even been an option for me to do.... What is more important, quick and cheap food.. or living a mentally/physically healthy life??? I choose health. First step is becoming aware of what we are being sold and how incorrect advertising is when it represents food items in the market. Read the book Salt, Sugar, Fat and you will never look at grocery items the same way again... I promise!
