Part 2 with Capt Jordan Todd: @ellenspooner caught this 16 pounder, @bigredon35 with an 18 pounder yesterday. “Education is key when being a true guide. Our main focus and job as a professional fishing guide should be to EDUCATE our clients on the fish we are targeting. Catching them is a bonus and the reason we all love it, but it should not be our main objective to kill everything we catch. Especially the breeding females during their spawning cycle. I’ve spent my entire life catching and studying these dinosaurs. I have a degree in Marine Biology bc I was fascinated with learning the water I live on. Yes! I have cleaned many of them for my clients to take home, but each one was to be used to learn over the years. I paid attention to what time of year eggs were found, along with size correspondence, what they were eating, Their behavior before and during the catch. Females are the big ones, a true big one is 15 pounds and heavier. Roughly 25-30 inches long. I’ve never cleaned a male larger then 13-14 pounds. Their spawning cycle is roughly end of July-Sept. If we as guides don’t start educating ourselves and our clients one the importance of releasing egg bearing females then we ourselves are responsible for the decline and disappearance of these amazing fish. The state, FWC, isn’t going to regulate them, so we must do it for ourselves. I’m asking all guides who target these around the entire Gulf coast.
