OMG ok so I keep having thoughts on Sam’s reaction in ”Tombstone.” Related to this post:

TLDR of that post:  Sam’s conversation with Dean in “Tombstone” about why Dean is so happy was actually meant to be Sam’s direct response to the more intimate Dean/Cas reunion at the end of the previous episode, which was cut due to higher ups meddling with how Dean’s sexuality was viewed by the audience.

Now reframe the whole episode with the idea that Dean was supposed to hug Cas and do a little face cradle and look into Cas’ eyes with Sam standing right there watching when they were reunited at the beginning of “Tombstone” (13x06).

I’ve always wondered why this episode split up the group into Sam/Jack and Dean/Cas. Castiel is Jack’s dad, Jack has been desperate to finally meet him, Jack is the one who woke him up from The Empty, so why wasn’t Cas partnered with his child so they could spend quality time together??

BECAUSE SAM IS THE ONE WHO BREAKS UP THE GROUP AND SAYS JACK IS GOING WITH HIM, AND THAT DEAN AND CAS WILL BE TOGETHER BECAUSE HE’S TRYING TO GIVE THEM “ALONE” TIME. Sam saw them embracing, he saw how badly his brother was hurting when Cas was gone, and now he sees his brother giddy and cheerful, and he knows the reason for this is Cas (Dean had already told him so), so he purposefully made the decision for them to partner up.

"Should we-" "No." Dean interrupted Cas, "not yet. We've got to ease him into it. Don't want to have him freaking out." "Dean, I don't believe Sam-" "Shh!" Dean regained his completely normal and casual position on the couch, moving a few feet away from Cas as soon as he heard Sam's voice. "Here you go, you guys," Sam dropped the bowl of popcorn in the area between Cas and Dean and went back to the recliner on the side. Sam studied them both as they simultaneously went for the bowl and they hands naturally gripped each other before snapping away. "Knew it." He muttered. "What?" Dean snapped. "I told you, Dean." Cas grabbed the bowl, placing it in his lap and regaining his position on the couch right next to Dean with his face on his shoulder. Dean's ears tinted red and he stiffened for a moment before realizing the lack of Sam's interest in them and placed his arm back around Cas.
