Heart Attaaaaack, Heart Attack Man (AKA What Do We Know About Partying Or Anything Else)*
Here are a few facts about last Saturday, August 29, 2015, at around noon:
• I was at BookSmart in Uptown (downstairs from Cheapo)
• I was wearing THIS t-shirt
• I’d been listening to one of the best dub albums to be released in the past 5 years
• I was able to pay $10 for a spinning comic book rack that BookSmart was getting rid of
• The weather was pretty much perfect
• I’d also purchased a few other books, since there was a 50% off, going-out-of-business sale going on
And....OH YEAH! I was also having a heart attack. Although not the kind that movies & TV would have you believe.
It wasn’t piercing pain or like having an elephant step on my chest. But it was definitely something that I’d never felt before. In fact, once I’d loaded that comic rack into my car, it was like lava was pouring through my veins.
But instead of immediately doing something about it, I figured, “Maybe having another cigarette will make this pesky feeling go away.”
When THAT didn’t work, I thought, “Damn. Maybe I’m just hungry.” So, I drove for a bit & ordered something from the first place I came to.
Believe it or not, Arby’s didn’t actually solve the problem either. That’s when I made up my mind that I needed to hit the ER.
But instead of simply hitting the nearest one, I realized that I should REALLY pick up my wife.
Because the last thing I wanted was to call her from the ER & say, “Hi, honey! I had a heart attack. Can you get a ride to the emergency room? Yeah, just look for me. I’ll be the one they’re pushing around on the gurney.”
Anyhoo, about four blood results & a couple of EKG’s later, it was confirmed. I’d DEFINITELY had a heart attack. Which resulted in me getting shuffled into an operating room, where they put a stent in a passage that was apparently 100% blocked.
This one HERE:
That’s a quick whiteboard sketch one of my cardiologists made. This was his name:
Which only made me think of THIS:
Anyhoo, I wasn’t out of the woods just yet. There were a few more places that could use attention:
Four more, to be exact. Which is exactly what they did a couple of days later.
And after was all said & done, these stents opened up my arteries so that blood could flow easier.
Which sort of left me feeling like some hideous freak, while under observation.
Drugged, sleepless, cut up & wires sticking out every which way. It’s bad enough that I was basically in a hospital bed for four days straight without bathing. After seeing these everywhere,
it was pretty clear that the antibacterial wasn’t because of the staff. It was so they wouldn’t catch anything from the unbathed.
Well, by Tuesday, it was all over & I was back at home.
And here I am a week later:
• Cigarettes completely cut from my life • Taking 15-minute walks twice a day • No longer eating like a 10-year-old
I’m also on so many meds that I needed one of THESE:
And they’re GREAT meds. So far, the trippy dreams I’ve had involve:
• An all-Midnight Star version of “Law & Order”
• David & Fred Beukema starting a progressive rock band called Minotaur
I’ve also got a lifetime of carrying THESE around to look forward to:
I can finally be one of those old farts who can randomly say, “Where’s my NITRO?” in a crowded room.
So, that’s it in a nutshell.
Sure, I’m reminded of last week’s nightmare whenever I look in the mirror.
But I feel better than I have in years. And I can only see it getting better with every mile marker I see in my rearview.
* Also, if that Beastie Boys song is already in your head, all’s going according to plan.
Obsessed with Kevin Murphy and Jingles
The latest episode of my comedy podcast OBSESSED features Kevin Murphy discussing his love of commercial jingles!
Would you like to hear Kevin sing the Oscar Meyer bologna AND weiner songs as Tom Waits? Or come up with brand new jingles for LinkedIn and PRISM? Or croon that classic tune "Lex Noxema Cream Your Face"?
Obsessed sidekick, Sam Landman, and I enjoyed the hell out of it as you can hear in the new episode of my comedy podcast OBSESSED!
Enjoy on my website or on iTunes.
And if you enjoy, those ratings and reviews sure are nice.
Thanks!
