wada sez: Wout Jut explained on deviantART: “The story is about the captured Megatron by the evil Optimus Prime. Optimus needed him to find the Key of Vector Sigma, so he can open a special gate. This gate brings you to other dimensions. It's also a little tribute to Stargate SG1.” On Seibertron, he went into more detail to explain why Megatron and Galvatron are separate individuals here: “I'm a big fan of Shattered Glass. Read the comic drawn by The Don and read Reunification. Loved that story. But I was sad about how simple Megatron died and how he became Galvatron. Like Gen1 has many universes, this universe is just a variant of the S.G universe. Things are just a little bit different. Since the IDW Galvatron I've hoped to see that the explanation was that they where brothers. Never happened. So I've took a little freedom and made them in the SG universe brothers. Still, It could happen that I maybe write a story where Galvatron is killed and later on that Megatron will be Galvatron. But maybe that's to much. A idea I've got this morning.” Many readers were confused by the inset panel of Optimus Prime pressing a button, as the control panel has an unfortunate tangent with Galvatron’s back, making it seem as if an unseen figure is pressing a button on Galvatron’s back. Philip Knott independently colored his own artwork, sharing it online as an alternate version; see below for that. Jut later re-released the strip with his own lettering, changing the dialogue slightly in the process; you can find that below as well, along with a huge swathe of behind-the-scenes material.

wada sez: This strip explains Grimlock’s motivation for departing to Hydrus Four to search for Nucleon in “Eye of the Storm”. The Dinobots are depicted with (I believe) original Cybertronian modes in flashback. Grimlock recalls his fellow Classic Pretenders, Bumblebee and Jazz, revived at the end of “All the Familiar Faces!”. He also remembers the Dinobots being offlined by a cosmically-empowered Starscream in “Dark Star”. In the comments, Niels shared a cute little anecdote: “It might interest you to know that at the Kapow Comic Convention in London this spring, Paul and I gave a print of the pencils (plus letters) of this page to Simon Furman himself, to thank him for the impact he had on our childhoods.” See below for a process breakdown.

wada sez: This is kind of an “in name only” Mosaic strip, but Sam Palmer had made a few contributions to the project proper. He explained the genesis of the strip on deviantART: “Here is the mosaic I created for the Auto Assembly 2011 Transformers Convention mosaic competition. As the judges were James Roberts and Nick Roche, the theme was obviously Wreckers, so I decided to write this story, about a post-LSOTW Impactor. In a rare move for me, I decided to draw it too (I'm a trained and qualified Animator, so drawing is a strength, but I've ALWAYS had problems drawing Transformers) but here it all clicked, so look out for more TF drawings and comics from me soon. Now, this may or may not be a prize-winning piece, as the creative competition entries haven't been judged yet, but my fingers are firmly crossed.” I actually have no idea if this entry won, and was unable to find any other entries!

wada sez: Part three of four—we’re really skipping ahead to get through this saga, I know! Now, something I’m really boggling over with this one is that Megatron ends up with Shockwave’s decapitated head, which again is just like Fun Publications’ Classics stories... but there’s just no way this one was intended to fit into that continuity, so I guess it’s just a wild coincidence. Apparently there was a miscommunication that led to letterer Sam Palmer not receiving Caroline Richard's coloured version of the strip, leading him to colour it himself! I’ve included Caroline’s version below—you’ll note that it uses the more-traditional Henkei! Henkei! color scheme instead of the Classics one Megatron had appeared with in previous parts of this story.

wada sez: Readers, give me strength. This strip is particularly interesting coming off the back of yesterday’s strip; I wonder if it was a deliberate decision on the part of the Mosaic editors to serialise them consecutively. This strip’s art style looks like it might also be a ripoff of all-round-douchebag Matt Moylan’s work on Lil Formers, though equally I may just have been biased by yesterday’s strip; this one isn’t nearly as close a match. The premise here is a riff on the cartoon episode “The Girl Who Loved Powerglide”, though presumably that isn’t the same girl in question, Astoria Carlton-Ritz? Strangely, despite this one being less offensively bad than yesterday’s, it received a much more mixed reaction, with a whole debate kicking off on TFW2005 after one user described the strip as “horrible”. Co-editor Shaun Knowler weighed in to refute the idea of the project’s standards dropping: “[...] The project is and always has been an "all-inclusive" sort of thing. We really weren't expecting it to explode like it did, especially in participation. We're not "pushing" for more, we just continue to get a good deal of submissions. If we didn't run them as often as we did (and believe me, we'd love to go back to the once-a-week schedule), it'd take eons to get them out there. And yeah, that's gonna lead to a great variance in quality, but honestly, I'd rather run most of them then spending days explaining to one hurt/offended fan or another why we decided not to run the strip they poured their heart, soul, blood, sweat, whatever, etc into. And don't think we haven't. And really, if you're suggesting otherwise, where does the line get drawn? Why not enforce some kinda "Your Art Must Be This Good to Post Here" policy in TFW's fan art section? Because that's not what it's about is it? Anyway, just seems that people get more vocal and blunt about "feedback" with Mosaics than they do with other fan art. Just found that kinda interesting, that's all.”

New York City

It's not that I'm obsessed with productivity in my life, but if I were, I'd have to call the last ten days in New York the best trip ever. Each day I met with editors and art buyers at all the magazines and ad agencies that I currently shoot for and would love to shoot for. I had 24 meetings in the 6 business days I was there. Rockin.  Seeing one intelligent, creative, witty, and sharp person after another left me feeling great - I'm so stoked to be working with people who I'd happily call my friends.

Not only did I get to see those amazing photo folks, but I also got to spend time with some dear friends all over the city.  Sam Palmer and I walked along the promenade in Brooklyn Heights.  Ralph Cubela and I got busy on the dancefloor at a latenight house party in a warehouse in Bushwick. Ellen Carpenter fed me buffalo burgers in Murray Hill and sipped on margaritas with me near Union Square. Emily Branham and I delighted in sazeracs in Williamsburg.  Jen Kessler showed me how to get to Carnegie Hall.  Mathieu Young wowed me at the ICP with his photograph in Time Magazine. Mitch Lewis and I tromped through the lower east side, and me and Jonah Levine closed bars in the East Village.  So wonderful.

And to top it all off, I got to see my family, too. Not sure if it's the same in yours, but "seeing" my family almost always means eating with them.  Joined my aunt Shelly and uncle Larry for breakfast, saw aunt Melissa and uncle Ed for lunch, and had brunch with cousins LIz and Mitch and Michelle, and little cousins Matthew and Hali. On different days, of course.
