Sam Shmith or the beauty of uncertain
I recently discover the work of this UK born artist, based in New York who lived in Australia for most of his life. What an inspiring suprise, what a delightful glance. Using his substantial photographic material, he creats artworks that combine different media such as pigment, digital type C and dye sublimation prints. This way, we can talk about “photo-composites”.
With a strong sensitive observation of his environnement, he shows us a wild range of landscapes enhanced by a mindful work to the lights and contrasts. If nature seems to be it’s main source of inspiration, houses and vehicules often pop up in it, which somehow, emphasize an idea of duality between what’s human and what’s not, between what’s out of control and what's manageable.
Also, to the glass of the shutter is added the glass through Shmith frequently likes to shoot, adding a metaphoric part to the action of looking itself : what is in, what is out ? Do the artist glorifies the world or do the world is magnificent, filling the artist with the role of the messenger, the translator of it’s beauty ?
