Sam Walsh, The Dinner Party, 1980
As someone who is unfamiliar with your work, what's it about?
I'm assuming you mean my writing, and not my day job (selling dog food)! I've pinned the plot summary for the current WIP, "Punk Isn't Dead", to my blog for anyone interested in reviewing the more detailed synopsis.
However, quick summary: superhero world where the main Justice League/Avengers team is the Crystals, led by Ethan "Azurite" Walsh, and the primary villains are a rogue anarchist group called the Resonants, led by a man who goes by Anarcho-Punk. The Crystals stand for the greater good, the law, and (in their minds) the innocents. The Resonants, meanwhile, represent selfish interest, a "do what you want" attitude, and are known to resolve their problems with violence.
There are other villains, but the Resonants are a spreading problem. There are a lot of people, metas and normal humans alike, who are angry at the world, the government - and the Crystals.
Tensions are building more than ever when Ethan's long-lost sister Sam shows up to join the Crystals, and she drags her new friend Beatrice Waters in with her. Sam is convinced she's the only one who can solve the problem of Anarcho-Punk and save countless lives.
Aaaand that's all I can tell without spoilers! I can answer more specific questions about the Resonants - Sam and the Crystals are handled by @thatcrazypoppiigirl , and Beatrice and the Resonant called Jazz are @that-catholic-shinobi's characters.
From Mike McCartney's twitter account September 27, 2024. Post reads: "Whilst in London for Pascal's 40th we popped into the National Portrait Gallery where Ro spotted this 60's painting by Sam Walsh entitled 'Mike's Brother.'"
Mike’s Brother (1964) by Liverpool artist Sam Walsh
Notes: First exhibited: Bradford Spring Exhibition (282) 1964. Subject is Paul McCartney of The Beatles, brother of Mike (McGear) McCartney, Walsh’s friend.
“Another of his most famous portraits, a giant painting of a young, fresh-faced Paul McCartney captured at the height of Beatlemania in 1964, is in London’s National Portrait Gallery – and thereby hangs another tale.
“Our kid rang me from the National Portrait Gallery one day saying ‘I’ve just been up to the restaurant and on the way down the stairs there’s a bloody big painting of my head,’” laughs Mike.
“He said: ‘it’s called Mike’s Brother!’”
A now rather quaint newspaper report from the time on the “giant oil painting of Paul McCartney – one of our famous Beatles” explains: “Sam, the artist, and he (Mike McCartney) have been pals a long time, long before Mike made a television appearance and dating back to his shows at Liverpool’s Hope Hall.
“Maybe that explains the title that will baffle the teenagers.”
🎈Happy 19th Birthday to Sam Walsh!🎈
I was in the National Portrait Gallery in London today. This charming portrait of Paul hangs at such an odd angle in a tight corridor that you can’t stand in front of it to photograph it. GRRRR. The only way to get a photo would be to stand on the escalator and video - which I will do early next week.
Here’s what the placard said: Paul McCartney b. 1942 “Mike’s Brother” Musician, singer, songwriter and composer. A seminal influence on popular culture, McCartney reached international fame in the 1960s as a member of The Beatles before becoming leader of the group Wings and later commencing on a successful solo career. His most recent album “New” was released in 2013. McCartney is a patron of a number of international charities. He was knighted in 1997. By Sam Walsh (1934-1989) Oil on masonite, 1964 Painted at the height of “Beatlemania.” In 1964 the album and film “A Hard Day’s Night” were released, and “Can’t Buy Me Love” reached the top of the UK and USA charts simultaneously. The artist was a friend of Paul’s brother, Mike, hence the reference in the title.
Commissioned as part of the First Prize, BP Portrait Award, 1967.
(That makes the portrait’s date rather confusing, but I assume they mean “commissioned” as “requested for donation to the gallery?”)
There’s another placard beneath, reading: Did you know? In 2016 Sr Paul was turned away from the rapper Tyga’s Grammies after party by security staff who didn’t recognize him. He reportedly responded “How VIP do we gotta get?” Tyga later described him as “a legend.”
Party Facts: In 1999 Sir Paul hosted the animal rights organization PETA’s “party of the century.” It took place at Paramount Studios and featured a vegan banquet and an animal friendly street fair on the studio’s New York street. He regularly spends the period between Christmas and New Year on St. Barts where in 2016 he was reported to have performed with The Killers at Roman Abramovich’s New Year’s party.
Top party skill: Providing the musical entertainment.
So what's like the basic synopsis of the Punk isn't dead comic? What's it about?
I don't think I can answer better than I did earlier!
Plotwise, Punk Isn't Dead takes place in a world where metahuman powers have recently surfaced in the population. Some people have chosen to use this power to become pillars of the law and backbones for their communities, and many such pillars belong to the superhero organization called the Crystals, run by Ethan Walsh, aka Azurite. Others have chosen to use their powers for personal benefit, and become rampant villains. This is how the anarchist group known popularly as the Resonants came to be -- and the group's popularity has spread like a wildfire among metas and normal humans alike behind the bloodthirsty, devil-may-care personality of Anarcho-Punk. The story is centered around Sam Walsh, Ethan's long-lost little sister, whose dream has been to join the Crystals since the team was founded. As she settles in, she meets Beatrice Waters, the daughter of a major pharmaceutical corporation, and the two become fast friends when Sam encourages Bea to lean into her metahuman powers for the greater good. Together, the two girls look to do the impossible and take down Anarcho-Punk for good -- but along they way, they learn that the monster and his rowdy group of bank-robbing thugs are much more than they seem.
I'm open to all and any questions about the Resonants -- @thatcrazypoppiigirl has most of the Crystals, and @that-catholic-shinobi has Beatrice Waters, the Resonant Jazz, and a third-party team known as The Rattlers, so ask them too!
