We are looking into owner-training a psychiatric service dog.
We don't have an official PTSD diagnosis but I believe it won't be that hard to get one when we talk to our new mental health team, hopefully soon. We have experienced more dissociation lately, more anxiety, and the other day our host had a flashback that has taken him out of commission as fronter for about 4 days. Plus we have intrusive thoughts about the trauma sometimes, and all of this makes it difficult to do adult things.
Because of all this, and because we are starting college classes in about a week and that's stressing the whole system out, we are looking into getting a service dog.
At first, our therapist suggested that we get a small animal ESA, like a rat, to bring to classes and help with the dissociation, anxiety, and other things. However, our school does not allow ESAs outside the dorms. So, a PSD would be able to accompany me to the classrooms and everywhere else and keep us grounded and calm and not walking into the road.
However, there may be some difficulty trying to owner-train while at college, when we have no private transport.
Just wanted to throw an update into the void, really, for documentation purposes. But if anyone has tips, or has owner-trained in Kansas, feel free to talk to us.
