so i was in starbucks getting breakfast today, and while i'm stewing over how not-great my work starbucks' response to mobile orders is, this older lady came up to me and was like "oh i love your bag! i've been looking for one that size forever, it's really cute"

to which i replied "oh, thank you! it's [x brand], it's the perfect size to carry all the stuff i need without being obnoxious on the train" and she was like "ah yeah that's one of my wife's biggest pet peeves, people on the train hitting each other in the face with their bags"

at which point i was low key like !!!!!!!!!!!!!! because even though i'm in a very liberal urban area, i was not raised in a liberal area in the slightest and desperately clung to the merest sign of queerness in anyone other than myself, and that tends to stick. so now any time someone around me is openly queer i'm like OH OH ME TOO ME TOO YOU'RE NOT ALONE FRIEND

so i was like 'how do i, an awkward and socially anxious mess, work MY gf into conversation as we're walking out this starbucks door noooooo she's leeeaving D:' and obviously i did not manage to say it in time, but then i realized

she was complimenting me on my bag

which means i am not the only person for whom the "same hat? SAME HAT!!!!!!!!" reflex kicks in around other queer people
