For years San Jose illustrator/artist/designer Samuel Rodriguez used graffiti to develop his art skill by himself, but eventually decided to build on that experience with formal fine art studies at California College of the Arts. Now blending the two practices "to explore his interest in social, historic, and cultural hybridity" Rodriguez has developed two styles: 'Topographical Portraiture' "made by stylizing a portrait with topographical lines and shapes," and 'Type Faces' working typography into portraiture. Rodriguez calls his mural work "colorful odes to the communities they occupy" and in 2017 Rodriguez created this mix of graphic and typographic elements in his community portraits on the side of the laundromat at N 8th at E Empire Streets. @samrodriguezart/
