Forgotten faces
Take my hand, take my whole life too
Spoilers for TFTSD Campaign 2 Grotethe
You know the story of the Farney family will never not be so tragic to me.
A family torn apart by a cruel monster who wanted to torture a man as punishment for not answering questions he didn’t even have the answers to.
When an armed battalion came to the farm lands their was no chance of them fighting back, let’s be honest even if the family banded together to fight these creatures were not of their world, what could a family of farmers do against an army of supernatural entity’s?
It only makes sense Barney would freeze up at the sight of his family being taken away, of course he would want justice so he would turn to higher powers for answers. Of course he would never feel like he would be ready so he wasted years upon years overly preparing for a battle he would be doomed to fail, because again what could one man do against a kingdom of undead? Imagine the years going by as he keeps sharpening his skills, preying till his voice goes dry, training till his limbs go numb, as his body slowly starts failing him with age, his mind growing weak from dementia, his memory’s fading away, slowly forgetting the faces of the people he vowed to save, eventually succumbing to the years and dying. But still remaining, because his desire for a justice he can’t even remember the cause to kept him bound to the mortal world were he was forced to wander.
Ellga was a child, what could she have possibly done? She was probably too young to even understand what was going on. But then she was taken from her home and family, taken into a strange kingdom and transformed into a monster by the man who kidnapped her and her family. The woman she called mother abandoned her for a reason she didn’t know (yes the countess had a good reason for leaving but Ellga didn’t know that), while her real family unknown to her toiled away in the depths of the vampspire as slaves. Then the man she called farther used her and later would reveal to her he never loved or cared for her, he was simply using her for his plans, her entire life was a lie!
When Ellga and Barney meet again at the beginning of the campaign of course they wouldn’t recognise each other it’s been centuries. But a part of me wonders how they must of felt after they learned the truth, Ellga trying to remember her forgotten life, trying to look back through her life to see if she could have spotted any signs that Hugo wasn’t who he said he was. Barney feeling crushing guilt and feeling like an absolute fool, he set out on a quest to avenge his family after they were taken from him. His memory’s had long faded from time and dementia, but that wouldn’t make him feel any better about the situation. His own daughter, one of his loved ones he dedicated his life to saving was in front of him the whole time and he never noticed. Neither of them could have known, it had been too long and they both changed too much to be recognised. but would they see it that way? Would they forgive themselves for missing something that to them in retrospect was obvious, even if in reality their was no way they could have recognised each other?
When they are both showed a magic ring that could bring a person to the prime of their life, both Ellga and Barney wanted it for different reasons. Barney wanting to return to the prime of his life so he can face the vampires who stole his family as the man he used to be. Ellga wanting it to see what it would be like to have ever had the chance to grow up into an adult, being a vampire she can never age. Barney tried to buy it but ultimately Ellga takes it and Barney then apologises to her for trying to buy it telling her “you were robbed of your adulthood, I wasted mine”.
Let’s not forget Marnie and her sons Samson and Titus, taken as hostages, turned into slaves and forced to forget their lives and loved ones. While Stinker (the dog) stayed with Barney, likely staying by his side and watching him slowly forget everything. Even in death he waited by his grave waiting eagerly for him to return to him.
When Barney remembers his mission, remember his family and finally finds his wife and sons again they don’t recognise him. When the curse is lifted and Marnie can finally see her husband again she sees that is has been along time, her husband has grown old without her and has spent untold years training to save them. Barney apologises to her for not saving them sooner, saying that he knows that he doesn’t deserve her and would understand if she wanted nothing to do with him after all this time, but she doesn’t blame him in the slightest.
Then Marnie turns to Ellga, imagine what it must have been like for Marnie this poor mother having her daughter torn from her arms as she’s dragged away into slavery. Then centuries later when she finally sees her again, Calliope Ellga her own daughter doesn’t even know who she is. Even after all of that, because duity calls Barney and Ellga have to leave to stop Hugo, keeping the family apart even when they could finally be together again. Stinker being asked to stay with Marnie and the boys to protect them until they came back.
When Barney and Ellga have a moment to talk Ellga says she doesn’t know what to call him or herself, now she knows he’s her real farther and Ellga isn’t her real name. But he asks her what she’d prefer and respects her wishes to be called Ellga, also telling her that she can just call him by his name and that he doesn’t feel like he deserves to be called her farther because he wasn’t able to be their for her. In between then and the finally they both share bonding moments, they fight together, the protect each other, they talk, they praise each other, they hug, Ellga starts feeling comfortable enough to call Barney her farther, they are able to start making up for lost time, but unfortunately it didn’t last.
Don’t get me started on the finally, while their souls lived on their body’s died. Marnie, her sons and her dog will be waiting for the rest of their lives to see Barney and Ellga again, they will never knowing what happened to them. Even after all of that, they will never be a family again, they will never get back what was stolen from them and they will never be able to reunite and start over, it was all for nothing.
