Okay, an interruption to the normal posts on this page^^' I wouldn't normally post something about digimon on tumblr (because that's on twitter) (and not counting the ask), BUT I can't deny that I want to share the project I was working on all January for the 10 years of my digimon fanfic "Project Illuminati" So I hope you like it^^

I admit that I was surprised to achieve something like this, but this story is my big project, and although I haven't been able to update the fanfic (personal issues, time, and study), I wanted to give something to my readers, and this animatic was what occurred to me^^ (I would have published it in August of last year - on the anniversary-, but it was at that time when my digital pencil was damaged and delayed MANY projects^^')

...Gaiomon?

Gaioumon!!!!!

So, back when I reviewed Black War Greymon, I mentioned that its X-Antibody form wasn’t actually the original design made for the role. Initially, this Ultimate-level fellow here – Gaioumon – was created as Black War Greymon X-Antibody. However, the Digimon team was so thoroughly enamored with it that they decided to give it its own name and identity separate from Black War Greymon, effectively promoting it into its own digimon unto itself. Which, y’know, understandable. Look at this guy!!! Objectively rad.

Said to have been discovered in a “neglected Oriental computer” (“Oriental”? Really? Who wrotethis????), Gaioumon’s got a solid samurai theme going on. It apparently has an “unbelievable” combat record from its countless battles, and wieldstwo swords known as Kikurin. These swords leave behind tracks of light when swung, known asRinkazan, which cut anything to pieces. Another attack can fuse its swords into a bow to convergethose lights and fire them, known as Rinkageki. The translations I’m getting from the wiki are giving me “Phosphorus” in relation to these attacks, though given its repeated use of the word “eerie”I think the intended motif is something similar to a Will-o-Wisp? It’s also got an attack known as Gaia Reactor, which concentrates energy in the atmosphere and detonates it. This is a variant of Gaia Force, a War Greymon attack that I went over back in Black War Greymon’s review.

But yeah, the main takeaway here is just how phenomenal of a design this is. Digimon has no shortage of dragons, dudes, and dragon dudes – far too many, I might add – but this is perhaps the best dragon dude. The almost-all-black color scheme is slick as hell, only broken up by some gold, silver, and red accents, withthe result feeling very streamlined in spite of how much is going on here. This sketch shows just how much detail the armor actually has, but it still manages to not feel overdesigned. The head is also excellent; although it does owe that partially to War Greymon, I feel Gaioumon pulls off the look far better.

Although noncanon, Gaioumon’s designer As’maria has also done artwork of a “Gaioumon X Burst Mode”. Burst Mode is a relatively underutilized concept that basically signifies an Ultimate-level digimon surpassing the power of the Ultimate-level. I don’t really like the idea of it – I feel this franchise has enough power creep happening constantly as is – but this design’s pretty cool nonetheless. Still, as cool as chest-teeth and fire are, I think I prefer the relative simplicity of the base design.

Gaioumon’s relatively obscure as far as digimon go, but it’s certainly a good one. There’ll probably never be another instance of me getting this hyped about a humanoid dragon digimon, but at least somethinggenuinely good came out of the franchise’s obsession with the archetype.
