TUV press officer Samuel Morrison on why he does not support Irish Rugby
The TUV press officer Samuel Morrison spoke to Balls.ie and explained that he personally does not support Irish rugby but supports 'the British teams'. He said he knows of TUV party colleagues who do follow Ireland. The TUV reacted against the announcement of Ireland's joint Rugby World Cup in late 2013. Morrison objects to what he calls 'the contrived political links between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland' implied in the bid. Samuel Morrison explained his take on Irish Rugby: "While the anthem of the Irish Republic is often played at rugby events that they don't recognise the fact that part of the island of Ireland is in the United Kingdom." He continued: "I took exception to Martin McGuinness talking about the nation of the island of Ireland. I also take exception to the contrived political links that Northern Ireland has with the Irish Republic because of the Belfast Agreement." He continued: "What I see in predominance when it comes to events at the Six Nations in Dublin is the tricolour and I don't see any recognition that there are people from Northern Ireland who don't feel any allegiance to that flag, and in fact, associate that flag, and I'm conscious that someone in the south would not associate it with this, but this is the reality in Northern Ireland, associate it with a thirty year campaign of terror to force use into somewhere we didn't want to go politically." My letter to the News Letter in response to Samuel Morrison
Dear Sir, I have to respectfully disagree with the letter by Samuel Morrison, 'What if ‘B’ in LGBT want equality?' (November 3 2015). Mr Morrison's premise is entirely hypothetical. Mr Morrison fails to address the actual subject, same-sex marriage, instead he talks of of group marriage. This is a straw man argument. The aspiration of the reform lobby is for same-sex marriage that is monogamous. There is no aspiration for same-sex marriage that is polygamous. Critically, there is no connection between these two aspirations. Nobody in the LGBT or reform community has argued for or expressed a desire for polygamy. Bigamy is a statutory offence in Northern Ireland under The Offences against the Person Act 1861, section 57. This law will not be overturned and nobody wants to overturn it The traditionalist lobby should put this bogus argument to rest. Mr Morrison quotes scripture, so he will be familiar with the basis of my argument which follows. The truth is that it is religion that warrants and it the religious who are practitioners of polygamy. In Genesis 4:19 it states that "Lamech married two women." Several men in the Old Testament were polygamists - Abraham, Jacob and David for example. Kenya has recently legalised polygamy. The argument for legalizing polygamy has biblical authority, as a member of their parliament put it: "Solomon never notified anyone. It is in the Old Testament." Yours sincerely, Brian John Spencer
My response to Samuel Morrison on gay marriage sent to the News Letter
Dear Sir, It seems that Samuel Morrison is arguing for polygamy for bisexuals. This is very bizarre. Firstly, it is not possible. Bigamy is currently illegal under 'The Offences against the Person Act 1861', section 57. Secondly, the introduction of polygamy would in any case amount to discrimination. Samuel Morrison argued, "If someone is bisexual they would, by the logic of the same sex marriage lobby, require a minimum of three people in a marriage to have their rights recognised." This argument doesn't carry any water. To make my point I refer to the highest court in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Lord Wilson of the U.K. Supreme Court said in an address to the Medico-Legal Society in Belfast in February 2014 ('Marriage is made for Man, not Man for Marriage'): "The introduction of same sex marriage is largely designed to avoid discrimination against gay people, whereas the introduction of polygamy would create discrimination against women even if some of them felt driven to escape poverty by marrying men on that basis." Samuel Morrison is wrong and should desist from speculation and hypotheticals which whip up fear but which are entirely bogus. The LGBT lobby is doubly against polygamy. Not only has the LGBT lobby never mentioned polygamy (it is culturally alien), but its legalisation would amount to discrimination, something the LGBT is against." Yours sincerely, Brian John Spencer See the Lord Wilson address here: https://www.supremecourt.uk/docs/speech-140218.pdf
