Continuing with my series incorporating traditional origami motifs into modular mandalas, here’s a new one I just designed using the traditional samurai helmet as the decorative element. I used bright, “childish” colors for this one, but I want to fold it again using a more dramatic color scheme. As always, this uses 8 squares, with no cutting or gluing. Some details are a little messy because it’s the first time I designed and folded it and some experimentation was involved…

(Besides this one, so far I’ve created modular mandalas incorporating the traditional “pajarita”; sailboat; crane, tortoise, and noshi (in one mandala); pinwheel; and butterfly.)

Clay helmet is done!

I'd say I'm done with it and there isn't anything else for me to do with it. I finished painting the rest of it today and covered it in PVA glue to give it extra hold and to add a nice shine. Overall I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I don't know what it is, but this kabuto has a very pleasing shape. If you've followed this page for a bit you might have noticed that a lot of Japanese armour is similar but not quite the same. The reason for that is most clans had a group of armourers just for their clan. The samurai helmet I made to fulfill the historical helmet brief for industry project set by Joe from @fbfx_ltd 😁 - I'm terrible at posting so this is a little late but I'm super pleased with my final helmet. A few small changes need to be made in the future but I'm super happy!! I may put my final video up later 😉 - - Samurai helmet based on the late muromachi period in Japan. It's made of fibreglass with fast cast details, laser cut acrylic and strung with shoelaces which have been weathered and dirty down applied.
